Hunt for the 1/sup 1/P/sub 1/ bound state of charmonium

Description: Using the Crystal Ball detector at SPEAR, we have looked for evidence of the isospin-violating decay psi' ..-->.. ..pi../sup 01/P/sub 1/, where /sup 1/P/sub 1/ is the predicted spin-singlet p-wave bound state of charmonium. For a /sup 1/P/sub 1/ state at the predicted mass (approx. 3520 MeV), we obtain the 95% confidence level limits: BR(psi' ..-->.. ..pi../sup 01/P/sub 1/) < 0.55%, BR(psi' ..-->.. ..pi../sup 01/P/sub 1/)BR(/sup 1/P/sub 1/ ..-->.. ..gamma..n/sub c/ < 0.14%. These limits are com… more

Fission-product yields for thermal-neutron fission of curium-243

Description: Cumulative fission yields for 25 gamma rays emitted during the decay of 23 fission products produced by thermal-neutron fission of /sup 243/Cm have been determined. Using Ge(Li) spectroscopy, 33 successive pulse-height spectra of gamma rays emitted from a 77-ng sample of /sup 243/Cm over a period of approximately two and one-half months were analyzed. Reduction of these spectra resulted in the identification and matching of gamma-ray energies and half-lives to specific radionuclides. Using thes… more

Nuclear-breakup mechanisms in the interaction of relativistic projectiles with heavy targets

Description: The breakup of a Au nucleus under bombardment with relativistic p, ..cap alpha.., and /sup 20/Ne has been investigated in an extensive, multi-detector study. The present discussion addresses some of the many aspects of the experimental results. A broad distribution of coincident fragment masses is observed, with the total fragment kinetic energy being higher than expected for a fission mechanism for total fragment mass less than or equal to 120. The formation of light fragments is shown to be i… more

Intermediate- and high-energy reactions of uranium with neon and carbon

Description: Target fragment production from the interactions of 1.0, 3.0, 4.8, and 12 GeV /sup 12/C and 5.0, 8.0, 20, and 42 GeV /sup 20/Ne with uranium has been measured using off-line gamma-ray spectroscopic techniques. The experimental charge and mass yield distributions are generally consistent with the concepts of limiting fragmentation and factorization at energies of 3.0 GeV and above. The total projectile kinetic energy was found to be the relevant scaling parameter for the comparison of reactions … more

Two recent charm search experiments with the multiparticle spectrometer at BNL

Description: Two recent experiments at the BNL Multiparticle Spectrometer searched for charm production in the ..pi../sup -/p interactions at 16 and 17 GeV/c. One experiment looked for D/sup *//sup -/ production with a fast K/sup +/ trigger, while the other experiment triggered on single-electron events. The K/sup +/-trigger experiment finds that the D/sup *//sup -/ cross-section at 16 GeV/c is less than 130 nb at 95% confidence level.
