Solar wind heavy ions from energetic coronal events

Description: Ions heavier than those of He can be resolved in the solar wind with electrostatic E/q analyzers when the local thermal temperatures are low. Ordinarily this condition prevails in the low speed solar wind found between high speed streams, i.e. the interstream, IS, solar wind. Various ions of O, Si and Fe are resolved in IS heavy ion spectra. Relative ion peak intensities indicate that the O ionization state is established in the IS coronal source regions at approx. 2.1 x 10/sup 6/K while the st… more

Weak interactions at high energies. [Lectures, review]

Description: Review lectures are presented on the phenomenological implications of the modern spontaneously broken gauge theories of the weak and electromagnetic interactions, and some observations are made about which high energy experiments probe what aspects of gauge theories. Basic quantum chromodynamics phenomenology is covered including momentum dependent effective quark distributions, the transverse momentum cutoff, search for gluons as sources of hadron jets, the status and prospects for the spectro… more

Production of leptons and lepton pairs in. pi. /sup +-/p interactions. [15 and 18 GeV/c, mass enhancement below rho]

Description: Two low sensitivity but excellent mass resolution lepton production experiments are reported on, both performed at SLAC. One is a study of e+- production in ..pi../sup + -/ interactions at 18 GeV/c performed using the SLAC hybrid bubble chamber. The other is a study of muon pair production in 15.5 GeV/c ..pi../sup + -/ interactions. It is shown that electrons are due to e pairs and are not produced in anomalously large quantities, and the first model-independent evidence for a mass enhancement … more

Study of the role of complete fusion in the reaction of /sup 48/Ca and /sup 56/Fe with cerium and terbium. [Cross sections, yield curves, tables]

Description: /sup 48/Ca and /sup 56/Fe beams from the Super HILAC accelerator were used to irradiate thick metal foils of cerium and terbium. Product gamma ray activities were detected offline and individual products were identified by half-life, gamma ray energy and gamma ray abundances. The production cross sections were iteratively fit to charge and mass dispersions to allow correction for parent decay and calculation of mass yields. From the mass yield curves contributions from quasielastic transfer, de… more

Phenomenology of heavy leptons and heavy quarks

Description: The review of the quark and lepton family includes properties of the tau, SU(2) x U(1) classification of the tau and its decays, heavier leptons, the spectroscopy of heavy hadrons composed of quarks, their strong and electromagnetic decays, the weak interaction properties of the c, b, and t quarks, and the decays of hadrons containing them expected within the context of the standard SU(2) x U(1) model. 76 references. Evidence for a new pseudoscalar resonance at 1. 26 GeV. [8. 45 GeV/c, isobar model, phase shift]

Description: Further results are presented from an isobar-model phase shift analysis of the eta ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ system produced in ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. eta ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/n at 8.45 GeV/c. We fine, in addition to the narrow (GAMMA approx. 25 MeV) D meson with IJ/sup P/ = 01/sup +/ at 1.275 GeV, a broad (GAMMA approx. 100 MeV) 00- object centered near 1.26 GeV and decaying mainly into delta ..pi... There is an indication of a second broad pseudoscalar near 1.40 GeV decaying into epsilo… more

Equilibration in the reaction of 175 and 252 MeV /sup 20/Ne with /sup 197/Au. [Energy, element, and angular distributions]

Description: The highly inelastic nuclear reaction of /sup 197/Au with /sup 20/Ne at 175 and 252 MeV laboratory energies is studied. Energy-, elemental-, and angular- distributions for atomic numbers 5 to 30 (175 MeV) or 34 (252 MeV) are presented. The means and widths of the kinetic energy spectra for detected elements are compared with a theoretical calculation. The calculation postulates thermalization of the incident projectile kinetic energy, and includes one sha(e-vibrational degree of freedom and rig… more

Studies of evaporation residue products from krypton and argon reactions. [Cross sections, interaction barrier, excitation functions]

Description: Mass distributions of evaporation residue (ER) products from /sup 86/Kr-bombardments of /sup 70/Ge and /sup 74/Ge were obtained by a time-of-flight method at energies ranging from the interaction barrier to 706 MeV. ER excitation functions were also obtained for a variety of target and projectile combinations. Results are compared with statistical model calculations and with results obtained from ..gamma..-measurements. It is deduced that at the lowest impact parameters, the reaction products b… more

High precision metal stable isotope ratio measurements using volatile metal chelates

Description: A series of volatile metal chelates were prepared for magnesium, calcium, iron, and cadmium. Extraction efficiency studies were done for magnesium and calcium in order to define the optimum conditions of pH and chelating agent required for recovery of these elements from aqueous media. Mass spectra of these chelates were obtained to evaluate their suitability for the measurement of metal stable isotope ratios. Chemical ionization mass spectrometry is most useful for the measurement of transitio… more

Determination of the chiral SU(4) x SU(4) breaking parameters

Description: Broken chiral SU(4) x SU(4) symmetry: from the observed mass spectrum of pseudoscalar charmed mesons the symmetry breakig parameters of the theory could be solved. It is found that both vacuum and Hamiltonian breaking play an important role as far as charmed states are concerned. Purely from the masses of D and F mesons the current algebra mass ratio m/sub c//m/sub s/ < 5 is deduced. This differs greatly from values obtained using linear or quadratic mass formulas. Considering eta, eta', and et… more

Parton recombination model including resonance production. RL-78-040

Description: Possible effects of resonance production on the meson inclusive distribution in the fragmentation region are investigated in the framework of the parton recombination model. From a detailed study of the data on vector-meson production, a reliable ratio of the vector-to-pseudoscalar rates is determined. Then the influence of the decay of the vector mesons on the pseudoscalar spectrum is examined, and the effect found to be no more than 25% for x > 0.5. The normalization of the non-strange antiqu… more
