Observation of the forbidden magnetic dipole transition 6/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/. -->. 7/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ in atomic thallium. [Interference, M1 and E1 amplitudes, polarization, fluorescence, hyperfine structure]

Description: A measurement of the 6/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ ..-->.. 7/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ forbidden magnetic dipole matrix element in atomic thallium is described. A pulsed, linearly polarized dye laser tuned to the transition frequency is used to excite the thallium vapor from the 6/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ ground state to the 7/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ excited state. Interference between the magnetic dipole M1 amplitude and a static electric field induced E1 amplitude results in an atomic polarization of the 7/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ sta… more

Electronic structure of the F center in the alkaline earth oxides

Description: The energy levels and wave functions of the ground and first few singlet and triplet excited states of the F center in MgO, CaO, and SrO were calculated as a function of the nearest neighbor ion positions. Configuration coordinate curves for A/sub 1g/, E/sub g/ and T/sub 2g/ displacements have been constructed and used to interpret the absorption and luminescence bands of the F center. The energy of the /sup 1/A/sub 1g/ ..-->.. /sup 1/T/sub 1u/ transition was set near the experimental value in … more

Photochemistry and enzymology of photosynthesis. Annual progress report, May 1, 1975--April 30, 1976

Description: Work during the reporting period can be separated into four main topics. Highlights include oxygen evolution, proton transport, acid-base induced fluorescence changes, and mass spectrometer studies. Under some conditions we have observed the apparent transition of S/sub 1/ to S/sub 2/ in the dark. Redox titrations showed that this transition has a midpoint potential of 400 mV at pH 7, and a pH dependence of 60 mV per pH unit. The proton uptake and release that apparently accompany the reduction… more

Theoretical modeling of the KrF fluorescence spectrum

Description: Dunning's amd Hay's electronic potential curves were used to compute transition moments and to predict emission profiles for comparison with the observed fluorescence spectra. By adjusting the ionic and valence states by 8 nm, many of the observed spectral features can be quantitatively accounted for. The synthetic spectrum of KrF includes the 220-nm D/sub /sup 1///sub 2// ..-->.. X transition, the 249-nm composite feature, and the 276-nm feature which is a superposition of the nearly coinciden… more

Crystal growth and evaluation of mercuric iodide nuclear detectors, November 15, 1975--June 30, 1976

Description: A research effort on mercuric iodide (HgI{sub 2}) was initiated in November 1974 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to complement the crystal growth of HgI{sub 2} now being studied as part of the SANDS Program at EG&G, Inc. at Santa Barbara, California. The program was supposed to carry on some crystal growth experiments in a horizontal furnace which, although was considered promising, had to be abandoned at EG&G, where the experiments concentrated on crystal growth in a vertical furnace. In… more

Effect of stress on the fluorescence of Kevlar fiber. [With and without epoxy resin]

Description: A preliminary feasibility study was initiated to determine if laser-induced fluorescence might reveal molecular changes due to uniaxial stresses on Kevlar, an aromatic polyamide fiber. The fluorescence spectrum, with a peak at 490 nm (excited by 290 nm), did not shift with stress, but the fluorescence intensity generally increased with stress. The magnitude of the increase was attenuated by epoxy resin. Implications and applications of the results are discussed. (DLC)

Observation of coherent resonance fluorescence in hot CO/sub 2/

Description: Hot CO/sub 2/ was used to check theoretical understanding by using one-nanosecond pulses. The results reported are in relatively good agreement with theory. The experimental setup consisted of a one nanosecond duration 1/2 millijoule switched-out pulse directed through two heated pyrex cells filled with CO/sub 2/ and fitted with NaCl windows at Brewster's angle. The cells were 190 cm long of which 160 cm were heated to 300 +- 10/sup 0/C for a total heated path of 320 cm. Results are shown. They… more
