Solar Schools Assessment and Implementation Project: Financing Options for Solar Installations on K-12 Schools

Description: This report focuses on financial options developed specifically for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in three California public school districts. Solar energy systems installed on public schools have a number of benefits that include utility bill savings, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and other toxic air contaminants, job creation, demonstrating environmental leadership, and creating learning opportunities for students. In the 2011 economic environment, the abilit… more

Module Technology: Current Practice and Issues

Description: PV modules must provide mechanical support for the cells, protect the world from the voltages inside, protect the cells, diodes and interconnects from the weather outside, couple as much light as possible into the PV cells and minimize the temperature increase of the cells. The package must continue to serve these functions for at least 25 years as that is the typical module warranty period today. Furthermore the package must do all this for as low a cost as possible since the key to large scal… more

Investigations of CuInSe2 Thin Films and Contacts: Annual Subcontract Report, 1 January 1990 - 28 February 1991

Description: This report describes research into electrical contacts for copper indium diselenide (CulnSe2) polycrystalline thin films used for solar cell applications. Molybdenum contacts have historically been the most promising for heterojunction solar cells. This program studied contact stability by investigating thermally induced bilayer reactions between molybdenum and copper, indium, and selenium. Because selenization is widely used to fabricate CulnSe2 thin films for photovoltaic cells, a second par… more

Market Transformation (Fact Sheet)

Description: Through the SunShot Initiative, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) works with manufacturers, communities, states, utilities, and other partners to enable the solar market by reducing non-hardware balance-of-system (BOS) costs, developing a skilled workforce, and eliminating market barriers to widespread adoption of solar technologies. The DOE SunShot Initiative is a collaborative national initiative to make solar energy technologies cost-competitive with other forms of energy by reducing the c… more

PVWatts Version 1 Technical Reference

Description: The NREL PVWatts(TM) calculator is a web application developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) that estimates the electricity production of a grid-connected photovoltaic system based on a few simple inputs. PVWatts combines a number of sub-models to predict overall system performance, and makes several hidden assumptions about performance parameters. This technical reference details the individual sub-models, documents assumptions and hidden parameters, and explains the seque… more

Power Purchase Agreement Checklist for State and Local Governments

Description: This fact sheet provides information and guidance on the solar photovoltaic (PV) power purchase agreement (PPA), which is a financing mechanism that state and local government entities can use to acquire clean, renewable energy. It addressed the financial, logistical, and legal questions relevant to implementing a PPA, but we do not examine the technical details?those can be discussed later with the developer/contractor. This fact sheet is written to support decision makers in U.S. state and lo… more

New Concepts for High-Intensity PV Modules for Use with Dish Concentrator Systems

Description: In this paper we report on our efforts to fabricate monolithically interconnected modules (MIMS) from GaAs device structures. The small size of the component cells comprising the MIM allows for operation at very high flux densities. This relaxes the requirement for a small spot-size to be generated by the optics. The devices are grown on semi-insulating substrates, allowing the incorporation of an extremely efficient back surface reflector (BSR). This BSR is an effective tool for thermal manage… more

New Microscopic Model of the Staebler-Wronski Effect in Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon

Description: A new microscopic and kinetic model of light-induced metastability in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) was recently proposed. Carrier recombination excites H from deep Si-H bonds into a mobile configuration, leaving a threefold-coordinated Si dangling bond (DB) defect at the site of excitation - a process long suspected to be an element of metastable DB production. Normally, mobile H are recaptured at DB defects and neither metastability nor net DB production results. However, when two m… more
