Evaluation of a Chicken 600K SNP genotyping array in non-model species of grouse

Description: This article tested the cross-species application of the Affymetrix 600K Chicken SNP array in five species of North American prairie grouse (Centrocercus and Tympanuchus genera). This study study provided evidence for successful cross-species application of the chicken SNP array in grouse which diverged ca. 37 mya from the chicken lineage. As far as the authors are concerned, this is the first reported application of a SNP array in non-passerine birds, and it demonstrates the feasibility of usi… more

Targeted Metabolic Profiles of the Leaves and Xylem Sap of Two Sugarcane Genotypes Infected with the Vascular Bacterial Pathogen Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli

Description: This article identifies discriminant metabolites between a resistant (R) and a susceptible (S) sugarcane variety at the early stages of pathogen colonization (30 and 120 days after inoculation—DAI) by untargeted and targeted metabolomics of leaves and xylem sap using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The data represent a valuable resource of potential biomarkers for metabolite-assisted selection of resistant varieties to … more

Does the left aorta provide proton-rich blood to the gut when crocodilians digest a meal?

Description: Article measuring blood parameters in the left aortae and atria of crocodilians. The findings do not support the hypothesis that a R–L shunt serves to deliver CO2 for the gastrointestinal system after feeding in crocodilians.

Lipoxygenase-mediated Oxidation of Polyunsaturated N-Acylethanolamines in Arabidopsis

Description: Article hypothesizing that lipoxygenase (LOX) participated in the metabolism of PU-NAEs through the formation of NAE-oxylipins. The data suggests that Arabidopsis LOXs indeed compete with FAAH to metabolize PU-NAEs during seedling establishment. Identification of endogenous amide-conjugated oxylipins suggests potential significance of these metabolites in vivo, and FAAH mutants may offer opportunities to address this in the future.

The Transcriptional Co-activator MBF1c Is a Key Regulator of Thermotolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana

Description: Article reporting that the highly conserved transcriptional co-activator, MBF1c (multiprotein bridging factor 1c), is a key regulator of thermotolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana. Results provide evidence for the existence of a tightly coordinated heat stress-response network, involving trehalose-, SA-, and ethylene-signaling pathways, that is under the control of MBF1c.

Underlying Ossification Phenotype in a Murine Model of Metastatic Synovial Sarcoma

Description: This article presents the analysis of genetic mouse models of synovial sarcoma to determine the extent of ossification in the tumors and its relationship with morbidity. The authors noted higher ossification within their metastatic mouse model of synovial sarcoma. Their conclusion is that both metastasis and ossification are dependent on time, but that they are independent of one another.

Biocultural Calendars Across Four Ethnolinguistic Communities in Southwestern South America

Description: Article describes how, since the mid-20th century, the so-called Great Acceleration has amplified processes of ecosystem degradation, extinction of biological species, displacement of local peoples, losses of languages, and cultural diversity. The authors examine cultural practices and socio-environmental changes across four contrasting ethnolinguistic communities in southwestern South America, from southern to northern Chile along a marked climatic gradient to show the broad application of the… more
