1964 computer run on a laser-imploded capsule

Description: WAZER Alchemy 7b (WA-7b) is a WAZER calculation of a laser-driven micro-implosion of a spherical capsule consisting of a thin gold pusher surrounded by a thick (frozen) deuterium ablator. The properties of the target capsule and the shape of the laser pulse used to irradiate it are described.

HTGR Base Program. Quarterly progress report for the period ending November 30, 1973

Description: The High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) work reported includes studies of basic fission-product distribution mechanisms, recycle fuel studies (including designing and testing of recycle test elements) and exploration of head-end reprocessing methods (as part of a national recycle plan and of a recycle fuel plan), and physics and fuel management studies. Materials studies include irradiation and analysis of fuel particles in capsules to evaluate fuel systems, and basic studies of control … more

Calculation of resonance self shielding in $sup 235$U

Description: Analytic and Monte Carlo calculations of the Bramblett- Czirr /sup 235/U transmission experiment STANuc!. Sci. Eng. 35, 350-357 (1969)! were performed. The numbcr of fissions from the uncollided flux could be calculated as a function of depth. The results of experiment and Monte Carlo calculations are tabulated and plotted; fission and total cross sections for /sup 235/U are shown. In view of the agreement between the analytic and Monte Carlo calculations, it appeared that the ENDF/B-III cross … more

Encapsulation of high-purity germanium detectors

Description: The encapsulation of high-purity germnium detectors is very desirable in order to increase their versatility and reliability. However, rapid and extensive degradation is seen for all detectors made from detector grade crystals which are encapsulated in a simple vacuum. Extensive studies have shown that the cause of this degradation is hydrogen adsorption on the detector surface. There it causes the formation of a strong p/sup +/ inversion layer which in turn shunts the detector junction. Reliab… more

Operational experience with the multipass 16-disc long path laser system

Description: A brief summary is given of the operational and maintenance requirements for the Livermore long path'' laser system--the first short pulse neodymium ( lambda = 1.06 mu m) glass disc laser system. It is being issued at this time because the system is presently scheduled to be shut down at the end of the calendar year 1973. If the hardware is then put on the surplus equipment list, it would be useful for the future owner to have such information. (auth)

Free-energy approach to computing dynamic phase change in materials

Description: The free energy approach to calculating dynamic phase change is described. It is assumed that the driving force for the transition is the difference in the Gibbs free energy for the phases present in the material. To demonstrate the validity of the theory, the model is applied to delta -phase plutonium. (auth)

Mechanical Properties of Nugget Sandstone

Description: The mechanical properties of Nugget sandstone have been determined from a number of independent measurements at pressures up to 30 kbar. Pressure- volume, strength, uniaxial stress, and uniaxial strain tests yield the failure surface and effective moduli as a function of stress state, i.e., mean pressure and shear stress. Acoustic velocity determinations provide the effective moduli for low-amplitude dynamic waves. At atmospheric pressure the initial effective bulk modulus in tests with applied… more

Temporal observations of the lambda5303 emission line profile during the 74 minute totality from the Concorde SST at the 30 June 1973 total solar eclipse: preliminary intensity variations above an active region

Description: From international astronomical union symposium on coronal disturbances; Surfers Paradise, Australia (3 Sep 1973). Apparatus was designed for installation on the Concorde SST to provide high resolution emission line profiles at the June 30, 1973 total solar eclipse. A prime objective was to obtain profiles that could be used to detect the coronal response to the 5 min periodicities observed in the solar photosphere. Stability of the sky scattered light, drastic reduction of seeing effects enhan… more
