Analysis of design practices for snubbers (report 3). [PWR, BWR]

Description: In an effort to understand the expected performance of snubbers, a survey of current design methods was performed. Questionnaires were sent to the major snubber manufacturers requesting information on important phases of snubber analysis, testing, shipping, and handling. The elements of design considered in the questionnaire were derived from an evaluation of snubber failure histories and the performance requirements of snubber users.

Solar thermal small power systems study, program summary report. Phase II: study results

Description: This Phase II Study of small solar power systems (SSPS) has been structured to determine conditions under which SSPS can be cost-effective sources of electric power in the US in the period 1985 to 2015. An extensive data base, which provides a discrete identification of all utility and industrial electric generating units up to and including 10 MW/sub e/ in rated capacity, has been prepared. This data base defines the market for which comparative evaluations are made of SSPS and alternative fos… more

Assessment of the radiological impact of coal utilization. I. Preliminary studies on Western coal. [Western USA; radionuclide impurities]

Description: It was the purpose of this project to broadly survey pathways of radionuclides in the coal fuel cycle, identifying critical questions and providing direction for subsequent, definitive studies of radionuclides in coal and the technological enhancement of concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides through use of this coal. Western coal was selected for study because of its prominence in the National Energy Plan. Specific objectives were to: investigate the fate of radionuclides in the c… more

Summary of project to develop handbook of human reliability analysis for nuclear power plant operations

Description: For the past two years Alan Swain and Henry E. Guttmann, of the Statistics, Computing, and Human Factors Division, Sandia Laboratories, have been developing a handbook to aid qualified persons to evaluate the effect of human error on the availability of engineered safety systems and features in nuclear power plants. The handbook includes a mathematical model, procedures, derived human failure data, and principles of human behavior and ergonomics. The handbook is expanding the human error analys… more

Alternatives to underground nuclear power plant siting

Description: The presentation contains the results of a literature review of concepts for augmenting the safety of light-water moderated nuclear power plants as alternatives to underground siting. Two types of alternatives were considered. The first type, consisting of alternatives to LWR power production technology such as the high temperature gas reactors (HTGRs), the liquid-metal fast-breeder reactors (LMFBRs), etc., has been previously discussed. The second type, consisting of alternatives within LWR po… more

REPiS: The Renewable Electric Plant Information System - 1999 Edition

Description: This technical report summarizes the data in the Renewable Electric Plant Information System (REPiS), a database of all known grid-connected renewable electric facilities in the US. It was originally designed in 1985 and updated in 1990 and 1994. The design of the database is discussed; some of the results of common search queries of the database are summarized. Data is presented on the amount of renewable electric capacity nationally that is operated, retired, planned, or of unknown status, as… more
