The US Support program to IAEA Safeguards - 2008

Description: The U.S. Support Program to IAEA Safeguards (USSP) was established in 1977 to provide technical assistance to the IAEA Department of Safeguards. Since that time the U.S. Department of State has provided funding of over $200 million and over 900 tasks have been completed by USSP contractors on behalf of the KEA. The USSP is directed by a U.S. interagency subcommittee known as the Subgroup on Safeguards Technical Support (SSTS) and is managed by the International Safeguards Project Office (ISPO) … more

NEW RESULTS FROM THE MUON G - 2 EXPERIMENT.

Description: The Muon g-2 collaboration has measured the anomalous magnetic g value, a = (g-2)/2, of the positive muon with an unprecedented uncertainty of O.7parts per million. The result a{sub {mu}{sup +}}(expt) = 11 659 204(7)(5) x 10{sup -10}, based on data collected in the year 2000 at Brookhaven National Laboratory, is in good agreement with the preceding data on a{sub {mu}{sup +}} and a{sub {mu}{sup -}}. The measurement tests standard model theory, which at the level of the current experimental uncer… more

High-energy high-luminosity electron-ion collider eRHIC

Description: In this paper, we describe a future electron-ion collider (EIC), based on the existing Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) hadron facility, with two intersecting superconducting rings, each 3.8 km in circumference. The replacement cost of the RHIC facility is about two billion US dollars, and the eRHIC will fully take advantage and utilize this investment. We plan adding a polarized 5-30 GeV electron beam to collide with variety of species in the existing RHIC accelerator complex, from polar… more

Indications of Conical Emission of Charged Hadrons at the BNL Relativistic HeavyIon Collider

Description: Three-particle azimuthal correlation measurements with a high transverse momentum trigger particle are reported for pp, d + Au, and Au + Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. Dijet structures are observed in pp, d + Au and peripheral Au + Au collisions. An additional structure is observed in central Au + Au data, signaling conical emission of correlated charged hadrons. The conical emission angle is found to be {theta} = 1.37 {+-} 0.02(stat){sub -0.07}{sup +0.06}… more

Working Group VI Summary Report: New Ideas Employing High-Power Lasers

Description: The objectives of this working group were to provide the ''Future Light Source Community'' information on: Electron-Laser interaction based sources; Plasma based radiation sources and accelerators; and Present and future high-power laser technology. A summary of presentations, discussions and opinions is presented next. At the end of this report, a few references are given. The list is very far from being complete but is meant as a start for further exploring the various topics discussed in thi… more

Development of a new generation of optical slope measuring profiler

Description: We overview the results of a broad US collaboration, including all DOE synchrotron labs (ALS, APS, BNL, NSLS-II, LLNL, LCLS), major industrial vendors of x-ray optics (InSync, Inc., SSG Precision Optronics-Tinsley, Inc., Optimax Systems, Inc.), and with active participation of HBZ-BESSY-II optics group, on development of a new generation slope measuring profiler -- the optical slope measuring system (OSMS). The desired surface slope measurement accuracy of the instrument is<50 nrad (absolute… more

Multi Element Si Sensor With Readout Asic for Exafs Spectroscopy.

Description: Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) experiments impose stringent requirements on a detection system, due to the need for processing ionizing events at a high rate, typically above of 10Mcps/cm{sup 2}, and with a high resolution, typically better than 300eV. The detection system here presented is being developed targeting these stringent requirements. It is the result of a cooperation between the Instrumentation Division and the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) of the Brookh… more

RIKEN WINTER SCHOOL: STRUCTURE OF HADRONS - INTRODUCTION TO QCD HARD PROCESSES. PROCEEDINGS OF RIKEN BNL RESEARCH CENTER WORKSHOP, DECEMBER 9-12, 1998.

Description: In this lecture I give a pedagogical introduction to the Perturbative QCD to understand the short-distance dynamics of the strong interaction. Starting with fundamental concepts such as the color degree of freedom of QCD, non-abelian gauge field theory, renormalization group equation etc., I explain a basic idea of the perturbative QCD and apply this idea to the e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} processes and the structure functions. The notion of mass singularity and the necessity of its factorization is… more

MEASUREMENT OF SINGLE TRANSVERSE-SPIN ASYMMETRY IN FORWARD PRODUCTION OF PHOTONS AND NEUTRONS IN PP COLLSION AT SQUARE ROOT = 200 GEV.

Description: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was commissioned for polarized proton-proton collisions, at the center of mass energy {radical}s = 200 GeV during the run in 2001-2002. The authors have measured the single transverse-spin asymmetry A{sub N} for production of photons, neutral pions, and neutrons at the very forward angle. The asymmetries for the photon and neutral pion sample were consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties. In… more

Rare K+ Decays from Experiment E787

Description: This paper presents the latest results from experiment E787, at Brookhaven National Laboratory, on K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +} {nu}{bar {nu}} and radiative K{sup +} decays. The result for K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +} {nu}{bar {nu}} uses data collected in runs taken during 1995, 1996 and 1997. In addition, they discuss plans for future measurements of K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +} {nu}{bar {nu}}.

Facility Environmental Vulnerability Assessment

Description: From mid-April through the end of June 2001, a Facility Environmental Vulnerability Assessment (FEVA) was performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The primary goal of this FEVA was to establish an environmental vulnerability baseline at ORNL that could be used to support the Laboratory planning process and place environmental vulnerabilities in perspective. The information developed during the FEVA was intended to provide the basis for management to initiate immediate, near-term, and … more

Point 2004 A Temperature Dependent ENDF/B-VI, Release 8 Cross Section Library

Description: The ENDF/B data library has recently been updated and is now freely available through the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC), Brookhaven National Laboratory. This most recent library is identified as ENDF/B-VI, Release 8. Release 8 completely supersedes all preceding releases. Release 8 will be the last release of ENDF/B-VI; the next release of ENDF/B data will be for the new ENDF/B-VII library. As distributed the ENDF/B-VI, Release 8 data includes cross sections represented in the form of a c… more
