SOLVENT EXTRACTION APPLIED TO REACTOR FUEL PROCESSING FIRST QUARTER CO-OP REPORT

Description: The solvent extraction of thorium with 42.5% TBP in a Decalin diluent was studied in a compound pulse column. The HETS for the extraction section of the column was 4.7 feet. A discussion of the method of gaphical calculations of a compound column is included. (auth)

Correlation of Polarographic Walf-Wave Potentials With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance "Chemical Shifts." Parallel Correlation With Chemical Reactivity Parameters. Report No. 35

Description: Since nuclear magnetic resonance ''chemical shifts'' are considered to be good measures of electron densities in molecules, the extent to which they can be correlated with the polarographic half-wave potentials of organic compounds has been surveyed. To extend the applicability and interpretation of the proposed correlation, parallel correlatioan of E, with Hammett's sigma and Taft's sigma parameters were made, since both of the latter are also regarded as indication of electronic distrinution … more

Investigation of Control Effectiveness and Stability Characteristics of a Model of a Low-Wing Missile With Interdigitated Tail Surfaces at Mach Numbers of 2.29, 2.97, and 3.51

Description: "A brief investigation of the longitudinal stability and control effectiveness at supersonic speeds of a model of a low-wing missile with interdigitated tail surfaces was made in the Langley Unitary Plan wind tunnel. The data were obtained at Mach numbers M of 2.29, 2.97, and 3.51 for Reynolds number (based on the mean geometric chord of the wing) of 1.15 x 10(exp 6), 1.14 x 10(exp 6), and 1.11 x 10(exp 6), respectively. Data were obtained for three settings of the longitudinal control surface… more

Hydrodynamic Characteristics of a Model of a Proposed Six-Engine Hull-Type Seaplane Designed for Supersonic Flight

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a six-engine hull-type seaplane designed for supersonic flight. The configuration had four engines mounted on top of the wing in individual nacelles and two engines mounted on top of the aft section of the hull with their inlets located on top of the wing.

PROPERTIES OF ARC-MELTED CHROMIUM-BASE ALLOYS

Description: screened for hot workability, oxidation resistance, and hot strength using small arc-melted ingots. The alloying elements investigated included Fe, Mn, Mo, Nb, Re, Ru, Ta, Ti, W, V, Zr, and Y in amounts up to 20 wt%. Of the fabricable alloys tested, the best combinations of oxidation resistance and strength, in the range of 2000 to 2300 deg F, were found in binary alloys containing 5 wt % molybdenum, 10 wt% tungsten, and 2 wt% niobium. While yttrium additions do not contribute to the hot streng… more

Properties of Arc-Melted Chromium-Base Alloys

Description: From abstract: "Twelve binary chromium-base alloy systems were screened for hot workability, oxidation resistance, and hot strength using small ore-melted ingots...Experiments with the preparation of large chromium-base alloy ingots showed that cold-mold ore melting was not suitable for preparing ingots containing over about 1 w/o of alloy addition."

Application of neutron monitors to process control in Recuplex. Status report

Description: A program was. initiated early in 1957 to develop a neutron monitor capable of detecting plutonium (Pu) concentration in process vessels in Recuplex. This followed an earlier application by Finished Products Operation and Research and Engineering of neutron monitoring to powder counting which had been successful and was being regularly used. The process vessel monitoring was to be done by the ``in tank probe`` method, utilizing the monitored solution as its own-moderator, and detecting the resu… more

Effects of Boattail Area Contouring and Simulated Turbojet Exhaust on the Loading and Fuselage-Tail Component Drag of a Twin-Engine Fighter-Type Airplane Model

Description: "An investigation of a twin-engine fighter-type airplane model has been conducted in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel to determine the effect on drag of a fuselage volume addition incorporating streamline contouring and more extensive boattailing of the engine shrouds. The effect of hot exhausts from the turbojet engines was simulated with hydrogen peroxide gas generators using scaled nonafterburning engine nozzles. Afterbody pressure distributions, base drag coefficients, and forces on the… more

Hydrodynamic Characteristics of a Model of a Proposed Six-Engine Hull-Type Seaplane Designed for Supersonic Flight

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a six-engine hull-type seaplane designed for supersonic flight. Four engines were mounted on top of the wing in individual nacelles and two engines were mounted on the top of the aft section of the hull. Results regarding the acceleration, gross-load-total-resistance ratio, stabilizer deflections, and reaction of the inlets to water are presented.
