F.C.D.A. Family Shelter Evaluation

Description: In order to determine the effects of atomic explosions on small civil defense shelters for family use, 29 simple structures were built along an arc 1200 ft from the target point and exposed to Buster Bursts B, C, and D. The structures were of four basic types; covered-trench, metal-arch, wood-arch, and basement lean-to. Because of poor cohesive properties of the soil, much of the earth cover on the shelters was removed by the first shot. Since test procedures prevented restoration of structures… more

REACTIVITY LIFETIME. TEST RESULTS DL-S-225(T-612118A). Section I, Second Performance

Description: The performance, reliability, stability, and reactivity lifetime variations of the Shippingport PWR are determined under normal steady state conditions. These characteristics are studied over a period of 758 EFPH, at a power level of about 60 Mw(e). Flux-tilt corrections and plant operations during this time are described. (T.F.H.)

The Coulometric Determination of Acid

Description: Introduction: "The need for a method of acid determination which could be used for small samples and easily adapted to remote control led to the investigation of the use of electrolytically generated base for the titration of acid in certain solutions. The use of electrolytically generated base for the titration of acetic acid in the presence of nitric acid has been reported (1)."

The Development of Plutonium Electrodeposition Methods : Interim Report

Description: From introduction: "The following report presents a body of information obtained in the Health Instrument Development Laboratory from September, 1948, to the present, and is intended to be a preliminary review of [the study of electrodeposition of plutonium]. Many improvements in technique and methods and investigations along lines not explored are suggested by the present work. These will be undertaken as time permits, and reported at a later time."

Production tests 300 series: A Bibliography

Description: This bibliography is a compilation of reports on production tests performed in the 300 Area from May 1944 to February 1957. It includes all tests covering engineering and physics experiments in the Hanford Test Reactor development; fabrication and subsequent irradiation of fuel elements and melt plant (slug fabrication) procedures. Subject, author and report number indexes are included. Addendum 1 gives the reactor production test number under which the fuel elements were irradiated.

Tests on Models of Nuclear Reactor Elements - Studies of Diffusion

Description: To estimate the distribution of temperature in the proposed nuclear reactor, one must determine a coefficient of eddy diffusivity and devise a suitable method of computing the heat transfer. Measurements of diffusion in a model of a blanket element for the proposed reactor indicated a gross eddy diffusion coefficient of about 0.002 (? .0005) ft{sup 2}/sec. Thus, the apparent eddy diffusion for the test conditions is about 200 times the molecular diffusivity of water and about. twice that of the… more

Estimation of Lung Dose from the Radioactive Cloud Associated with a Nuclear Detonation

Description: A method is developed for estimating the dose to the lungs of a person exposed to the airborne radioactive dust from the cloud associated with a nuclear detonation. The analysis is applied to data collected at a point about 275 miles from the test site in the Fall, 1951, weapons tests in Nevada.

Soldering Small Beads to Fine Wires

Description: One method suggested for soldering small beads to fine wires using a torch to heat the bead, flux, and magnesia brick did not prove entirely satisfactory in this case. It was found the brick would draw heat away from the bead and flux at too fast a rate resulting in a poor weld, a rough surface, and an excessive accumulation of flux on the bead. Secondly, removal of the depleted flux presented a problem when the welding was done on the surface of the brick.

Range-Energy Tables

Description: The tables and graphs of this publication are essentially an expansion of the 'Range-Energy Curves' of Aron, Hoffman, and Williams (AECU-663). The original work of Aron et al is extended to include pions, protons, deuterons, tritons, and He{sup 3} particles in selected absorber elements and in some compounds that are useful either as target materials or as scintillating materials. This extension is an outgrowth of needs that arose during the course of certain experiments that have been carried … more

Nuclear Thermodynamics of the Heaviest Elements

Description: The phenomenon of alpha particle emission, a general observable property for the nuclides above lead, makes it possible to relate these nuclides energetically. The radioactive decay energy along a radioactive series can be summed so that the total decay energy for each nuclide in the series is known with respect to its position above teh bottom of the series, that is, with respect to its terminal lead (or bismuth) isotope. This can be done for each of the four mass types and, as shown, one can … more

Photosynthesis

Description: Although there has been considerable progress toward an understanding of the processes of photosyntehsis in recent years, the advances have been followed rather lcosely by symposia, monographs and reviews of the subject matter, particularly during the last three years. In view of the comprehensive coverage it would appear that the present review might very well be limited to a discussion of certain subjects of special interest to the authors and some with which they are especially familiar. The… more

THE RADIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT AND RECOVERY OF CONTAMINATED AREAS

Description: The Civil Effects Test Operation Exercise CEX-57.1 following Operation Plumbbob was carried out to obtain information on decontamination procedures that could be used as radiological countermeasures. The test was conducted on D + 1 and D + 2 days after shot Coulomb C. Data were obtained on reclamation of land areas by scraping with a motorgrader, on fire-hosing and scrubbing a concrete- slab roof, and on fire-hosing a composition roof. In addition, some shielding data were obtained for a small … more

Tritium from each f o i l was collected and then measured by a gas-counting technique. The qualitative r e s u l t s indicate t h a t high-energy t r i t o n s are emitted i n r e l a t i v e l y large abundance from a l l targets and with each of the bombarding p a r t i c l e s .
