Report on SOM Investigations in Arizona (Except the Plateau Province Area)

Description: From summary: Union Mines' examination of Arizona's pegmatites, lode deposits of the central and southeastern parts of the state, and heavy mineral concentrates from few placer deposits indicates that SOM is practically non-existent in the first two and that minor amounts of monazite and possibly other S-37 minerals are present in the last.

Columbia River Temperature Survey at Hanford Engineer Works: Preliminary Report

Description: It was agreed during a meeting on July 10, 1945 that an investigation should be made by the Technical Department to determine how fast and in what fashion the temperature of the effluent water from the 100 Areas is dissipated in the columbia River. A preliminary report on this investigation is submitted herewith for review by interested parties.

The U + 4 - U02 ++ Couple in H2SO , and the U + S - u + 4 Couple in HCl

Description: Technical report: Measurements have been made on the equilibrium between Cu, Cu2+, U4+, and UO22+ in H2SO4 in an attempt to establish the value of the U4+ - UO22+ couple potential. The value of the formal potential for the U3+ - U4+ couple in 1N HCl at 0 degrees C was determined to be + 0.65 v.

Extension of the Chaplygin Proofs on the Existence of Compressible-Flow Solutions to the Supersonic Region

Description: "It has been known for some time that the velocity of sound is not the upper limit for potential flow. S. A. Chaplygin in his paper "On Gas Jets" (NACA TM No. 1063) carried out some interesting proofs on the existence of solutions and gave proofs relating to maxima and minima of certain functions. In the present paper these proofs are extended to include the supersonic potential air-flow field adjacent to the subsonic region treated by Chaplygin" (p. 1).

A Condition on the Initial Shock

Description: "Initial shocks of the type that occur on airfoils at stream Mach numbers less than unity are shown to satisfy a certain condition, namely, that the local Mach number behind the shock wave tends to approach unity. This result is, in nature, similar to the classic condition of Kutta on the circulation" (p. 1).

Steady- and intermittent-flow coefficients of poppet intake valves

Description: Report presenting flow coefficients of an intake valve, seat, and port combination were measured under steady- and intermittent-flow conditions. Tests were conducted at large and small pressure drops over an engine-speed range of 800 to 3600 rpm.

Effect of Mach and Reynolds Numbers on Maximum Lift Coefficient

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the effects of Mach and Reynolds numbers on the maximum lift coefficient of aircraft. Flight testing was conducted on six airplanes outfitted with measuring tools and flow at various Mach and Reynolds numbers.

A Multiple Bridge for Elimination of Contact-Resistance Errors in Resistance Strain-Gauge Measurements

Description: Note presenting a multiple-bridge circuit that eliminates contact-resistance errors of the first order between the arms of the ordinary Wheatstone bridge. The circuit is applied to the elimination of the effects of contact-resistance variations that may occur in resistance strain-gage measurements made through switch contacts or slip rings. The general theory is derived and correct circuits and constructions are described.

Wing plan forms for high-speed flight

Description: Report presenting an analysis which indicates that for aerodynamic efficiency, wings designed for flight at supersonic speeds should be swept back at an angle greater than Mach angle and the angle of sweepback should be such that the component of velocity normal to the leading edge is less than the critical speed of the airfoil sections. This principle can also be applied to wings designed for subsonic speeds.

Flight Investigation at High Speeds of Profile Drag of Wing of a P-47d Airplane Having Production Surfaces Covered With Camouflage Paint

Description: Report presenting a flight investigation made at high speeds to determine the profile drag of a P-47D airplane wing with production surfaces covered with camouflage paint. The results indicated that a minimum profile-drag coefficient of 0.0097 was attained for lift coefficients from 0.16 to 0.25 at Mach numbers less than 0.67.

Analysis of Deep Rectangular Shear Web Above Buckling Load

Description: From Introduction: "An analysis of a square web above the buckling load was presented in reference 1. The analysis of reference 1 therefore was repeated for a shear web with depth/width = 2.5. Comparison of the results with those for the square web then would indicate the effect in the depth-width ratio."

Analysis of cooling limitations and effect of engine-cooling improvements on level-flight cruising performance of four-engine heavy bomber

Description: From Introduction: "The difficulties experienced in cooling the exhaust-valve seats of the rear-row cylinders have been overcome to a considerable extent by improving the mixture distribution through application of the injection impeller (reference 1) and by augmenting the flow of cooling air to the critical baffles (reference 2). Flight tests of this airplane (reference 3) indicated that the temperatures of exhaust-valve seats on rear-row cylinders were markedly lowered by these modifications ā€¦ more
