Uraniferous Coal and Carbonaceous Shale in Northeast Paraná, Brazil

Description: From abstract: Uraniferous coal has been found in northeast Parana', Brazil, in the Rio Bonito formation of Pennsylvanian age. In the majority of coal samples taken the uranium oxide content ranges from 0.005 to 0.030 percent, but selected screened samples have contained as much as 0.45 percent uranium oxide. The sampled thickness of the coal seam ranges from 17 to 54 centimeters and averages 31 centimeters. Channel samples across the entire thickness of the coal zone were taken in two places. … more

Reconnaissance for Radioactive Minerals in the Southern Part of Brazil

Description: From introduction: This report describes the results of reconnaissance for radioactivity of rocks, exclusive of coal, in the States of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul during the years 195 through 1956. Reports on reconnaissance and detailed studies of uraniferous coal are being prepared for publication. This report concerns work performed by the Brazilian National Nuclear Energy Commission and the United States Geological Survey (on behalf of the United S… more

An Occurrence of Rhenium, Associated with Uraninite in Coconino County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: Twenty-nine samples of sedimentary rocks of Triassic age from the Sun Valley uranium mine in northern Arizona were analyzed spectrographically, and 11 of these samples contained 0.005 to 0.1 percent of the rare metallic element, rhenium.

Reconnaissance for Radioactive Minerals in Washington, Idaho, and Western Montana, 1952-1955

Description: From abstract: Approximately fifty radioactive deposits and nearly fifty properties not abnormally radioactive were examined during a geologic reconnaissance for radioactive minerals in Idaho, Washington, and western Montana during the period July 1952 -- June 1955. The most important uranium deposits are in or near granitic to quartz monzonitic intrusions of probable Cretaceous age in central and northern Idaho, westernmost Montana, and northeastern Washington.

Uranium Deposits of the Carlile Quadrangle, Crook County, Wyoming

Description: From abstract: The uranium deposits in the Carlile quadrangle, southwestern Crook County, Wyo., are in relatively flat-lying sandstone beds in the lower part of the Inyan Kara group of Early Cretaceous age. The Carlile mine has the largest deposit in the quadrangle; the ore minerals are carnotite and tyuyamunite associated with carbonaceous material in a sandstone lens.

Uranium Series Disequilibrium in Radioactive Ores

Description: From introduction: The purposes of this paper are to tabulate and discuss the results of a number of complete disequilibrium analyses, to illustrate a proposed classification of disequilibrium patterns, to study these disequilibria as clues to the understanding of the geochemical history of the samples and of the deposits, and to point out some of the difficulties when simply comparing radioactivity and chemical uranium assays for interpreting equilibrium or disequilibrium in samples.

Mineralogy, Internal Structural and Textural Characteristics, and Paragenesis of Uranium-Bearing Veins in the United States

Description: From introduction: The purpose of this paper is to summarize and review some of the recent mineralogic information relevant to uranium-bearing veins in the United States, as well as to describe some of the reported mineralogic associations and the modes of occurrence of the uranium minerals in vein deposits.

Mineral Deposits of Central America

Description: From introduction: This report is based on investigations carried on by the Geological Survey (U. S. Department of the Interior) under the auspices of the Interdepartmental Committee on Scientific and Cultural Cooperation (U. S. Department of State) and the Foreign Economic Administration. The function of the last two agencies is presently carried on by the International Cooperation Administration. Coal Geology of the White Oak Quadrangle, Magoffin and Morgan Counties, Kentucky

Description: From abstract: The White Oak quadrangle lies near the western edge of the eastern Kentucky coalfield and includes approximately 59 square miles of parts of Magoffin and Morgan Counties, Ky. The outcropping rocks are equivalent to most of the Breathitt formation of Pennsylvanian age. The regional southeast dip of the rocks is interrupted by the Irvine-Paint Creek fault, the Caney anticline, the Grape Creek syncline, and the Johnson Creek fault.

Synthesis and Properties of Carnotite and its Alkali Analogues

Description: A report which records the results of experiments dealing with the synthesis of carnotite and its alkali analogues. The work was primarily concerned with the preparation of single crystals suitable for detailed structural analysis, though some insight into the chemistry of the precipitation of carnotite was obtained.

Determination of Thorium in the Parts Per Million Range in Rocks

Description: Abstract: "A procedure for the determination of thorium in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10 parts per million ThO2 in felsic or mafic rocks. Thorium is extracted by mesityl oxide and purified by iodate precipitation from nitric acid medium containing tartaric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The thorium is determined spectrophotometrically with thoron from meso-tartaric acid medium."
