Geology and Mineral Resources of the Northern Part of the North Cascades National Park, Washington

Description: Introduction: This report was started as part of a study of the North Cascade Primitive Area, an area of about 830,000 acres, which adjoined the Canadian border on the north and which extended from Mount Shuksan on the west to Rock Mountain on the east. In the fall of 1968, Public Law 90-544, 90th Cong., reclassified the North Cascade Primitive Area and certain other national forest lands and created the North Cascades National Park, the Ross Lake National Recreation Area, and the Pasayten Wild… more

Earthquake Resistance of Earth and Rock-Fill Dams, Report 2: Analysis of Response of Rifle Gap Dam to Project Rulison Underground Nuclear Detonation

Description: Summary: The motion of Rifle Gap Dam was measured in September 1969 during the Project RULISON underground nuclear explosion. The observed response was then compared with the response computed in a mathematical model. Observed and computed responses were similar. From this study it appears that the mathematical models used are applicable to the design and analysis of soil structures, at least for ground motion intensities comparable to those observed at Rifle Gap Dam. Experimental Investigations of a Fin Protuberance Partially Immersed in a Turbulent Boundary Layer at Mach 5

Description: Various flow visualization results at a nominal Mach number of 5 are presented for cylindrically blunted, unswept and 60-degree swept fins with and without small clearance gaps, partially immersed in a turbulent boundary layer of about 2.6 inches thickness. In addition, pressure and heat transfer measurements were obtained on the flat plate upon which the fin was mounted. Oil smear, azobenzene and Schlieren flow visualization tests were made.

Water Resources of the Red River of the North Drainage Basin in Minnesota

Description: The report consists of three principal sections; environmental setting, water resource management, and the hydrologic system. The environmental setting describes the land and people as related to water resources. The section on water resource management is intended to provide practical information needed for the planning and management of water resources. The section on the hydrologic system is a more technical discussion of water in the Red River basin. The section on water management can be u… more
