Progress Report for the Month of January, 1952

Description: This progress report of the Battelle Memorial Institute covers information in many categories. These include development of ceramic fuel elements, general ceramics, uranium and its alloys, thorium and its alloys, development of metallic fuel elements and assemblies, metals and alloys for reactor components, miscellaneous metallurgical work, liquid coolants and fuels, reactor engineering studies, and mechanism development.

Metallurgy Division Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending July 31, 1951

Description: Technical report outlining the effect of strain rate on the tensile properties of thorium. It has been found that the yield strength increases slightly with increasing strain rate, and that tensile strength increases but to a less extent. Studies on the fabrication of thorium by extrusion and drawing have continued, as have studies on the extrusion cladding of thorium and uranium with zirconium. [From Summary}

The formation of chemical film deposits on aluminum surfaces

Description: From abstract: "The purpose of this investigation was to establish basic rates of formation of chemical films deposited on aluminum surfaces from water flowing over such surfaces. It was desired to obtain specific information, within certain ranges, as to the influence of temperature, water velocity, and type of aluminum on the rate of film formation."

Process Tube Pressure - Stress Factors

Description: This report discusses the state of stress caused by pressure in process tubes, elaborating on five "theories of failure" that each explain the stress in process tubes in a different manner. These theories, which are depicted in a graph, include maximum normal stress, maximum strain, maximum shear stress, maximum strain energy, and maximum strain energy of distortion.

Properties of the System - Uranyl Nitrate - Aluminum Nitrate - Nitric Acid - Water - Hexone. Part VII. Distribution of Uranyl Nitrate, Nitric Acid, Plutonium (IV) and Plutonium (VI) from 0 to 60°C.

Description: This report discusses studies regarding the distribution and other properties of uranyl nitrate, nitric acid, plutonium (IV) and plutonium (VI) as part of the Redox Process that separates plutonium, uranium, and fission products.

Fixation of Mixed Fission Product Activity by Soils of the Savannah River Project

Description: From introduction: "A study of the fission product activity-fixing properties of the Savannah River Project soils was undertaken by this site to provide data for the planning of the waste disposal program for the Savannah River Project."

The [beta]-Spectra of Pu²³⁹, Pu²⁴⁰, Pu²⁴¹and Sm¹⁵¹

Description: The [beta] spectrum of the 10-year Pu²⁴¹ was run on a sample of radiochemically pure plutonium containing the isotopes Pu²³⁹, Pu²⁴⁰, Pu²⁴¹, isotopically enriched in Pu²⁴¹ by pile neutron irradiation. The isotopic composition was determined mass spectrographically.

The Resistivity of Cu₃Au During Neutron Irradiation

Description: Report discussing an experiment in which samples of initially ordered and disordered copper-gold alloy were exposed to the neutron flux of a graphite moderated nuclear reactor. "Two specimens were irradiated at the same time and at the same position in the reactor. Their temperature was controlled at 80°C. Electrical resistivity measurements were made on the specimens during the course of the irradiation."

Heats of Solution of the Cobaltous Nitrate Hydrates in Water and in Certain Organic Solvents and Binding Energies of Molecular Ligands

Description: Abstract: "Heats of solution have been measured for the hexahydrate, tetrahydrate, trihydrate and dihydrate of cobaltus nitrate in water and in a series of organic solvents, including isobutyl alcohol, diethyland monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, tributyl phosphate and dimethyl formanide. For some solvents, where the solubility of the salt of its reaction product was insufficient, measurements were made in a mixture with acetone. Such solvents in… more

Summation Report: Recovery of Radium From K-65 Residue (23-E): Job 23

Description: Abstract: "Methods for recovering radium from K-65 residue have been investigated. A process using Versene was developed and demonstrated on a laboratory scale. In this process K-65 residue is leached with Versene solution and radium is adsorbed from the leach liquors and purified by the use of cation exchange resin."

Flux in a Rectangular Cavity.

Description: A problem proposed by E. Hart to determine whether there are locally high or low neutron densities at the corners of a cubical cavity in a graphite lattice. To simplify the computations consider an infinite two dimensional lattice with a square cavity that has a point source of neutrons at the center (see Figure 1).

The Distribution of Pu(VI) and Pu(III) in Thenoyltrifluoracetone-Benzene-Nitric Acid Mixtures

Description: The distribution coefficients of Pu(VI) and Pu(III) have been measured as a function of the TTA, hydrogen ion, and nitrate ion concentrations in the TTA-benzen-nitric acid system. The extraction constants for Pu(VI) and Pu(III) are 1.4 X 10(-2) and 2 X 10(-5), respectively.

Modes of Acceleration of Ions in a 3-DEE Cyclotron.

Description: The analysis shows that a symmetrical three-dee cyclotron accelerating ions below relativistic velocities has the property that ions of different e/m rations can be accelerated without changing the frequency of the electrical power supplied to the dees or the value of the magnetic field. The energy gain per revolution of the ions which can be accelerated in the various modes are found, considering three identical dees of arbitrary angular widths. For these calculations it has been assumed tha… more
