Altitude chamber evaluation of an aircraft liquid hydrogen fuel system used with a turbojet engine

Description: From Introduction: "The objective of this report are (1) to describe the complete fuel system, (2) to discuss the procedure used for transitions between JP-4 fuel and hydrogen, and (3) to present and discuss engine performance obtained with both fuels, and (4) to review the reliability of the fuel system."

Design and performance of flight-type liquid-hydrogen heat exchanger

Description: Report presenting an investigation of a liquid-hydrogen fuel system developed to operate one of the turbojet engines in a twin-engine light bomber at an altitude of 50,000 feet and Mach number 0.75. The heat exchanger was evaluated in an altitude test chamber in conjunction with the complete aircraft fuel system. Results regarding calculated heat-exchanger performance, experimental heat-exchanger performance, and reliability are provided.

Design and Performance of Fuel Control for Aircraft Hydrogen Fuel System

Description: Memorandum presenting the system analysis, design, and performance of a control system for an experimental flight-type hydrogen fuel system. The fuel system was designed to investigate some of the problems associated with the utilization of hydrogen as an aircraft fuel. Speed control of the engine was obtained by coupling the hydrogen regulator to the JP-4 fuel control.

Flight Investigation of a Liquid Hydrogen Fuel System

Description: Memorandum presenting testing of a twin-engine light bomber modified to utilize hydrogen fuel in one of the two engines during flight at an altitude of 50,000 feet. Three completely successful flights were made using hydrogen fuel. Data are presented to show the effect of tank agitation on fuel pressure and fuel losses.

A Description of a Shock Wave in Free Particle Hydrodynamics with Internal Magnetic Fields

Description: Abstract: "The structure of an extremely strong magnetohydrodynamic shock is discussed in the limit of no particle collisions. It is tentatively concluded that the shock transition takes place through the mechanism of a strong electric field produced by charge separation. The pressure in the shocked plasma is due primarily to a very high electron temperature. The ions, on the other hand, undergo an irreversible temperature change of only 3."

Radioactive contamination in liquid wastes discharged to ground at separations facilities through December 1956

Description: This document summaries the amounts of radioactive contamination discharged to ground from separation facilities through December 1956. Detailed data for individual disposal sites is presented on a month basis for the period of July through December 1956. Previous publications of this series may be referred to for specific information on measurements and radioactivity totals prior to July 1956. Tables I and II list the major disposal sites in separation facilities, total volume of waste dischar… more

Results of heat decay test

Description: During the outages of 9-28-57 and 10-14-57 a test was performed at KW-Reactor to evaluate conditions present during front nozzle replacement programs. The intent of the test was to prove that backflow from the rear crossheader would provide sufficient cooling to prevent slug damage under the following conditions: 1. The reactor has been shut-down at least eight hours. 2. The headers which supply rows of nozzles to be replaced are valved to the relief riser on the rear, and throttled to a header… more

Early Unstable CO2-Fixation Products in Photosynthesis

Description: Some chemical, physical, and chromatographic properties of the hydroxylamine stabilized early products of CO{sub 2} fixation in photosynthesis are described. Although no definitive structural information is yet available, these properties, together with the biochemical context in which the material appears, make possible some likely suggestions about the nature of the substances.

Dynamic Corrosion Screening Tests on Inconel and Nickel in NaCl-MgCl$sub 2$- UCl$sub 3$Bath

Description: Nickel is more susceptible to mass transfer ina 100hr nonisothermal dynamic corrosion system than is Inconel when exposed to a NaCl-MgCl/sub 2/-UCl/ sub 3/ (50.01800 F. No nickel mass transfer was observed in a 500hr test at 1350 F, but Inconel showed some attack under s transfer was observed in both tests, being more severe at the higher temperature. On the bases of these preliminary tests, it appears that nickel is a more satisfactory container than Inconel for the chloride bath at temperatur… more

Some Effects of Radiations on Cell Proliferation

Description: Some of the factors controlling tissue growth in animals and cell proliferation in unicellular organisms are reviewed. Radiation damage in diploid yeast cells manifests itself sometimes in delayed lethal effect and decreased cell division rate over several generations in the progeny of the irradiated cell. Recovery of the progeny of irradiated yeast cells from phenotypic expression of radiation damage can be delayed over many generations and is similar, in time rate of onset to the onset of rad… more
