RAD/COMM ''Cricket'' Test Report

Description: A series of tests were performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to evaluate and characterize the radiological response of a ''Cricket'' radiation detection system. The ''Cricket'' is manufactured by RAD/COMM Systems Corp., which is located in Ontario, Canada. The system is designed to detect radioactive material that may be contained in scrap metal. The Cricket's detection unit is mounted to the base of a grappler and monitors material, while the grappler's tines hold the material. It … more

Magnetization rotation or generation of incoherent spin waves? Suggestions for a spin-transfer effect experiment.

Description: ''Spin-transfer'' torque is created when electric current is passed through metallic ferromagnets and may have interesting applications in spintronics. So far it was experimentally studied in ''collinear'' geometries, where it is difficult to predict whether magnetization will coherently rotate or spin-waves will be generated. Here we propose an easy modification of existing experiment in which the spin-polarization of incoming current will no longer be collinear with magnetization and recalcul… more

Probe initial parton density and formation time via jet quenching

Description: Medium modification of jet fragmentation function due to multiple scattering and induced gluon radiation leads directly to jet quenching or suppression of leading particle distribution from jet fragmentation. One can extract an effective total parton energy loss which can be related to the total transverse momentum broadening. For an expanding medium, both are shown to be sensitive to the initial parton density and formation time. Therefore, one can extract the initial parton density and format… more

Processing Cost Analysis for Biomass Feedstocks

Description: The receiving, handling, storing, and processing of woody biomass feedstocks is an overlooked component of biopower systems. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to identify and characterize all the receiving, handling, storing, and processing steps required to make woody biomass feedstocks suitable for use in direct combustion and gasification applications, including small modular biopower (SMB) systems, and (2) to estimate the capital and operating costs at each step. Since biopower app… more

MULTI-PHASE FRACTURE-MATRIX INTERACTIONS UNDER STRESS CHANGES

Description: The main objectives of this project are to quantify the changes in fracture porosity and multi-phase transport properties as a function of confining stress. These changes will be integrated into conceptual and numerical models that will improve our ability to predict and optimize fluid transport in fractured system. This report details our progress on: (1) developing the direct experimental measurements of fracture aperture and topology using high-resolution x-ray micro-tomography, (2) modeling… more

A Nuclear Microbattery for MEMS Devices

Description: This project was designed to demonstrate the feasibility of producing on-board power for MEMS devices using radioisotopes. MEMS is a fast growing field, with hopes for producing a wide variety of revolutionary applications, including ''labs on a chip,'' micromachined scanning tunneling microscopes, microscopic detectors for biological agents, microsystems for DNA identification, etc. Currently, these applications are limited by the lack of an on-board power source. Research is ongoing to study … more

Test Plan to Update SRS High Level Waste Tank Material Properties Database by Determining Synergistic Effects of Dynamic Strain Aging and Stress Corrosion Cracking

Description: The structural integrity of High Level Waste tanks is defined by the demonstrated confinement of the waste by the tank structure under design basis conditions. a comprehensive test plan is presented here to develop a mechanical and corrosion properties database to develop a fundamental understanding of the synergistic effects of DSA and SCC due to high temperature service of the HLW tanks.

Geotechnical Analysis Report for July 2001 - June 2002

Description: This Geotechnical Analysis Report (GAR) presents and interprets the geotechnical data from the underground excavations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The data, which are obtained as part of a regular monitoring program, are used to characterize conditions, to compare actual performance to the design assumptions, and to evaluate and forecast the performance of the underground excavations. GARs have been available to the public since 1983. During the Site and Preliminary Design Valida… more

Characterization of Groundwater Microbial Communities from a Chlorinated-Ethene-Contaminated Landfill

Description: Molecular (rDNA), phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA), and substrate utilization (BIOLOG) techniques were used to assess structural and functional differences between groundwater microbial communities from a chlorinated-ethene (CE)-contaminated landfill. Prokaryotic cells were collected from pristine (LFW 43B) and CE-contaminated (LFW 62D) groundwater monitoring wells on 0.2 micron filters, DNA was extracted from the filters, and libraries were prepared. For well LFW 43B, 26 clones were exa… more

Study of alpha-decay damage in a glass-bonded, sodalite ceramic waste.

Description: A glass-bonded, sodalite ceramic waste form that contains fission products, uranium, and plutonium is intended for disposition in a geologic repository. Over the many years the waste is expected to be in the repository, there is a potential for waste form degradation due to alpha decay damage. To investigate the effects of alpha-decay damage in glass-bonded, sodalite ceramic waste forms, several waste forms were produced with a {sup 238}Pu loading of 1.8 weight percent. This loading is roughly … more

IRS's 2002 Tax Filing Season: Returns and Refunds Processed Smoothly; Quality of Assistance Improved

Description: A letter report issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "The tax filing season is when millions of taxpayers file their returns and seek assistance by calling or visiting IRS's offices or Web site. Because of the large number of returns and critical nature of IRS's filing season activities, GAO was asked to assess IRS's 2002 filing season performance in processing tax returns and refunds and providing timely and accurate assistance to taxpayers."

Department of Agriculture: Improvements in the Operations of the Civil Rights Program Would Benefit Hispanic and Other Minority Farmers

Description: A letter report issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "The Farm Service Agency (FSA) runs a direct loan program that provides loans to farmers who are unable to obtain private commercial credit to buy and operate farms. FSA is required to administer this program in a fair, unbiased manner. GAO found that during fiscal years 2000 and 2001, FSA averaged 4 days longer to process loan applications from Hispanic farmers than it did for non-Hispanic farmers: 20 days ver… more
