Hanford Engineer Works technical progress letter No. 146, April 13--19

Description: Further data on the changes in length and weight of expanded graphite samples which were exposed in the pile in atmospheres of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and helium show that all three gases produce roughly the same shrinkage and weigh loss. This result is unexpected in that there is no precedent for such behavior in a helium atmosphere; however, it was found that water vapor had entered the helium stream by some unknown means and had condensed on the plugs at the inlet end of the tube. Recovery of Uranium From Oil Distillation Residue

Description: Abstract: The complete development of an effective process for recovery of the uranium in the residues from distillation of used Kinney and diffusion pump oils or similar oils is described. After considerable study and experimentation with several methods, a successful procedure has been developed. The recommended procedure embodies solution of the residues in trichlorethylene followed by extraction with nitric acid. Recovery of uranium is better than 99 percent effective and the method may be … more

An Investigation of the Lateral-Control Characteristics of Spoilers on a High-Aspect-Ratio Wing of NACA 65-210 Section in the Langley 8-Foot High Speed Tunnel

Description: Report presenting a lateral-control investigation of 3- and 6-percent chord spoilers projecting on the upper surface of a wing of high-aspect ratio. The spoilers were found to give large rolling moments at Mach numbers below the Mach number corresponding to the break in the rolling-moment-coefficient curves. Results regarding section pressure distributions, rolling-moment characteristics, normal-force characteristics, pitching-moment characteristics, wing-torsional considerations, and hinge-mom… more

Drag characteristics of rectangular and swept-back NACA 65-009 airfoils having aspect ratios of 1.5 and 2.7 as determined by flight tests at supersonic speeds

Description: Report presenting tests to determine the effects of sweepback angle and aspect ratio on the drag of an NACA 65-009 airfoil at supersonic speeds. The results indicated that for the range of Mach numbers investigated, increasing the sweepback angle and decreasing the aspect ratio reduced the value of the wing drag coefficient.

Air-Flow Behavior Over the Wing of an XP-51 Airplane as Indicated by Wing-Surface Tufts at Subcritical and Supercritical Speeds

Description: Report presenting the air-flow behavior over the wing of an XP-51 airplane including photographs of tufts attached to the wing surface and chordwise pressure distributions. A comparison of tuft studies from flight results are compared with results from wind-tunnel testing. Three types of flow were observed: steady flow, unsteady flow, and break-away flow are provided.

A Study of Several Parameters Controlling the Trajectories of a Supersonic Antiaircraft Missile Powered With Solid- or Liquid-Fuel Rockets

Description: Memorandum presenting a calculation of the trajectories for a supersonic antiaircraft missile by a step-by-step integration method for a number of different conditions. The effects of changing drag, initial thrust ratio, and weight ratio, which are the principal variables controlling the trajectory for a fixed launching angle, were investigated.

The Maintenance of Animals Containing Radioactive Materials

Description: Abstract: In the Biology Division, the maintenance of animals containing radioactive materials posed many problems. In addition to routine care of the animals, protection had to be provided for the personnel who worked with the contaminated animals. Frequent air changed in the room in which the animals were caged were necessary: farm workers were required to wear masks; animal cages were checked regularly for radiation; acid was used on the sawdust in the excrete pens; and a new, more efficient… more

Resonance Scattering of Neutrons by Mn55

Description: Abstract: Although we are generally interested in nuclear resonance levels, our measurements on Mn55 (naturally occurring Mn is 100 percent Mn55) were undertaken in order to corroborate Goldhaber's discovery of an extremely large scattering by this element.

Flight Measurements of the Flying Qualities of a Lockheed P-80A Airplane (Army No. 44-85099): Lateral- and Directional-Stability and Control Characteristics

Description: "This report contains the flight-test results of the lateral and directional-stability and control phase (including tests with wing-tip tanks) of a general flying-qualities investigation of the Lockheed P-80A airplane (Army No. 44-85099). These tests were conducted at indicated airspeeds up to 494 miles per hour (0.691 Mach number) at low altitude and up to 378 miles per hour (0.816 Mach number) at high altitude. These tests showed that the flying qualities of the airplane were for the most par… more

High-Speed Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Northrop YB-49 Airplane

Description: Tests were conducted to find the effects of compressibility on the longitudinal stability and control of a 1/7-scale semispan model of the Northrop YB-49 airplane. Lift, drag, pitching moment, and elevon hinge moments were measured and are presented in graphical form. The results show that, due to a loss of lift on the outboard portion of the wing, the longitudinal static stability decreased rapidly as the Mach numbers increased above 0.735 the model experienced a climbing moment at positive li… more

Estimated Flying Qualities of the Martin Model 202 Airplane

Description: The flying qualities of the Martin model 202 airplane have been estimated chiefly from the results of tests of an 0.0875-scale complete model with power made in the Wright Brothers tunnel at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and from partial span wing and isolated vertical tail tests made in the Georgia Tech Nine-Foot Tunnel. These estimated handling qualities have been compared with existing Army-Navy and CAA requirements for stability and control.
