The Reactivity of Uranium and Blacosolv

Description: Abstract: "Blacosolv, trichloroethylene, is used in degreasing uranium metal. Tests were made under possible industrial conditions to determine whether a hazardous reaction between uranium and Blacosolv could occur. Temperature-rise measurements showed that there was no reaction of the metal, in various states of subdivision, with Blacosolv at temperatures up to 850 F. However, a reaction was observed in tests under which the finely divided metal, wet with solvent, was subjected to a severe imp… more

Transient Temperature Variations During the Self-Heating of a Plasma by Thermonuclear Reactions

Description: Abstract: "The possibility of transient temperature variations during the self-heating of a plasma by thermonuclear reactions was investigated. Calculations were performed on an IBM Card Program Calculator. Estimates of the time scale for self-heating were obtained. It was concluded that it would be unsafe to assume that the nuclear temperature is always equal to or greater than the electron temperature in a discussion of plasma instabilities for a plasma with 10 percent or greater tritium conc… more

An Integrated Miniature Solvent Extraction System for Processing Radioactive Solutions

Description: Abstract: "Because of the radiation hazards inherent in processing large volumes of radioactive solutions by solvent extraction techniques, there is need for a system with small hold-up which can be contained within a minimum of shielding and yet which is versatile enough to be used as a research tool. A system utilizing a miniature mixer-settler has been constructed and its successful operation by remote means demonstrated. The unit is semiportable and employs a number of novel features of val… more

Deep Underground Test Shots

Description: From abstract: "The purpose of this note is to consider the feasibility of conducting kiloton-weapons tests in underground holes sufficiently deep so that the explosion will be effectively contained. Such a shot would have the advantage that it could be detonated independently of weather conditions, and thus would allow greater freedom in the test program."

Process Tube Pressure - Stress Factors

Description: This report discusses the state of stress caused by pressure in process tubes, elaborating on five "theories of failure" that each explain the stress in process tubes in a different manner. These theories, which are depicted in a graph, include maximum normal stress, maximum strain, maximum shear stress, maximum strain energy, and maximum strain energy of distortion.

Recent Total Neutron Yield Measurements

Description: The report summarizes results obtained since September, 1951, by total neutron yield experiments using 190 Mev deuterons and the MnSo4 tank method (UCRL-1375 and UCRL-1480). A new method of beam monitoring has resulted in establishing firmly the absolute yield for solid uranium and thorium primary targets backed by a solid uranium secondary. The beam monitoring was done by using a primary target built into a faraday cup. This method circumvents errors caused by recombination in the ionizatio… more

Braze Alloys v.s. Atmospheres : Final Report Project 1325

Description: Summary. At the time this project was initiated, all brazing had been confined to small retorts of ten cubic feet capacity or less. Larger assemblies were scheduled which required retorts of over 100 cubic feet capacity. Hydrogen atmospheres had given the best results, however, there was considerable reluctance to use hydrogen in these large retorts from a safety standpoint. It was thought that thru the use of PMC 2252, an argon - 2 1/2% hydrogen gas atmosphere which in non-explosive, suffici… more
