A Study of Some Congenital Anomalies of the Teeth

Description: Anomalies of the teeth include a variety of expression such as: anodontia, hyperdontia, peg teeth. opalescent dentine, mottled enamel, and other imperfections of the teeth. This paper is concerned primarily with anodontia in human subjects, although other abnormalities of interest are mentioned. Insufficient datum is the principal difficulty encountered in determining the mechanism and means of transmission in human genetics. Small families, slow breeding, and inability to subject humans to exp… more

A Study of the Bacterial Flora of Food Utensils in Hardin College Cafeteria and Twenty-Five Eating Establishments in Wichita Falls, Texas

Description: The problem of this thesis consists primarily of a bacteriological survey of the eating utensils of Hardin College Cafeteria and twenty-five other eating establishments in the city of Wichita Falls, Texas. This investigation was made primarily with reference to a determination of the possible presence of typhoid and related organisms, and secondarily to an investigation of the actual presence of those bacterial organisms associated with the more common outbreaks of food poisoning.

A Study of the Role of Complement in the Protection of Akr Mice Against Transplanted Lymphoid Leukemia

Description: It seemed desirable to investigate further the possible role of complement and its components in the protective action of serum against transplanted neoplasms. It is the purpose of this thesis to present data which suggest that the C'4 component plays an active part in this process though the mechanism is not disclosed.

The Synecology of Phyco-Periphyton in Oligotrophic Lakes

Description: This study is designed to (a) demonstrate the highly productive nature of the littoral area as compared to the pelagic region, (b) the possible importance of phyco-periphyton in the diets of fish, (c) the effects of meteorological conditions on distribution of phytoplankton, and (d) a demonstration of the invalidity of using artificial substrates as a universal means of measuring productivity.

Taxonomic Analysis of Marine Actinomycetic Isolates

Description: Though this current study was initiated independently and was not a test laboratory for the taxonomic sub-committee's evaluative program, the problem outlined in this treatise was also designed in an effort to test certain characteristics of the actinomycetes of both a biochemical and morphological nature. This problem employed methods that might absolve or establish certain criteria for taxonomic use in the group of actinomycetes.

The Taxonomic Significance of the Foliar Epidermal Hairs of Several Families of Dicotyledons

Description: The present investigation deals with the study of non-glandular epidermal hairs from the leaves of two hundred representative dicotyledons of forty-eight families in the Central North Texas area. Special attention has been given to the Compositae and Leguminosae in an effort to find a possible correlation between epidermal hair morphology and the taxonomic position of the plants concerned.

A Technique for the Mass Culture of Aquatic Actinomycetes

Description: The purpose of the problem was to develop a laboratory technique for mass culturing of the aquatic actinomycetes. In order to solve the problem, it was necessary to devise a suitable culture chamber that would nurture the various species in both primary and secondary stages. It was also important to provide an adequate medium for growth of these organisms. Finally, the construction of the culture chambers must provide for a continuous exhaust of the taste and odor compounds so that the producti… more

Thyroid Ultrastructural Changes Induced by Hypothermia

Description: Investigations have shown that the hypothalamus and pituitary respond to decreases in body temperature by stimulating the thyroid gland to release T3 and T4 hormones. This study was designed to investigate ultrastructural changes of the thyroid gland induced by hypothermia. The ultrastructural changes produces by stimulation by Thyroid Stimulating Hormone were also examined as an adjunct to the hypothermic stimulation of the gland. There was a significant increase in microvilli on the luminal b… more

Toxicity Studies of Aquatic Actinomycetes

Description: Since Actinomycetes have been isolated from finished public drinking water, it is believed that the organisms are unaffected by the chlorination and flocculation of water treatment plants and pass as spores through the filters into the general distribution system. For this reason it was deemed imperative to study the toxic effects of these organisms.

Toxicological Evaluation for the Ocular Administration of Tolrestat: An Aldose Reductase Inhibitor for the Treatment of Diabetes

Description: Aldose reductase inhibitors (ARI's) have been shown to attenuate or prevent several complications of diabetes in animals. Tolrestat is a potent and unique ARI from Ayerst Laboratories, New York, NY. The efficacy and toxicology of tolrestat via topical ocular administration was examined. Tolrestat effectively enhanced corneal reepithelialization and was efficacious in the prevention of cataracts in the streptozotocin-diabetic rat. Ocular tissues were examined by slit lamp biomicroscopy, scanning… more

The Use of Genetic Polymorphisms and Discriminant Analysis in Evaluating Genetic Polymorphisms as a Predictor of Population

Description: Discriminant analysis is a procedure for identifying the relationships between qualitative criterion variables and quantitative predictor variables. Data bases of genetic polymorphisms are currently available that group such polymorphisms by ethnic origin or nationality. Such information could be useful to entities that base financial determinations upon predictions of disease or to medical researchers who wish to target prevention and treatment to population groups. While the use of genetic in… more

The Use of Similarity Indicies to Assess the Spatial Differences of the Phytoplankton Communities in Lake Ray Roberts, Texas

Description: A study of the phytoplankton communities of Lake Ray Roberts was conducted at three sampling sites on two sampling dates during the summer of 1995, assessing both community structure and chlorophyll a concentrations. Eight similarity indices were then used to characterize and compare the communities of these sites. Both community similarity and chlorophyll a concentrations were evaluated using a minimum detectable difference equation to determine the amount of change that must occur in these pa… more
