For the Sake of the Song: Essays on Townes Van Zandt: After he died, Townes Van Zandt found the success that he sabotaged throughout his short life despite the release of sixteen brilliant albums. Since his death, numerous albums both by and in honor of him have been released and many critical articles published, in addition to several books (including Robert Hardy’s A Deeper Blue by UNT Press). For the Sake of the Song collects ten essays on Townes Van Zandt from a variety of approaches. Contributors examine his legacy; his use of the minor key; his reception in the Austin music scene; and an exploration of his relationship with Richard Dobson, with whom he toured as part of the Hemmer Ridge Mountain Boys. An introduction by editors Ann Norton Holbrook and Dan Beller- McKenna provides an overview of Van Zandt’s literary excellence and philosophical wisdom, rare among even the best songwriters.
Water Quality Corridor Management for Restoration (WQCM-R) Modeling Dataset: The dataset was developed to support research intended to develop a spatially-explicit model that prioritizes riparian areas in terms of potential for ecosystem restoration specifically to improve water quality downstream of the riparian area, and ultimately improve drinking water quality. The model was developed and then tested on the Lewisville Lake watershed (north central Texas, just north of Dallas, Texas, USA). The dataset contains environmental data for 90 sub-watersheds that form the overall Lewisville Lake watershed with a corresponding identification map.
Monthly Average Prices of Cattle at Fort Worth, 1951-1952, With Some Consideration of Factors Involved in the 1952 Price Drop: This report consists of a presentation of prices paid for the various classifications and grades of cattle sold in the Fort Worth Livestock Market during 1952; a comparison of 1951-1952 prices showing a sharp decline in the price of all grades and classifications which began in June of 1952; and an examination of some of the major factors contributing to the decline in cattle prices as reflected in the Livestock Market, Fort Worth, Texas. From a study of cattle prices that prevailed in the Fort Worth market during 1951 and 1952, and a consideration of some of the factors contributing thereto, the following conclusions are drawn: First, prices of all grades of cattle soared to unusually high levels during 1951, thereby accentuating the drop in price which occurred in the latter part of 1952. Second, the withholding of cattle from slaughter, during a cattle build-up process, rather than a scarcity of cattle in this country was primarily responsible for extremely high prices in 1951. Third, cattle production in this country has progressed in cycles of eight to ten years duration of each; the period under consideration was on the build-up side of the present cycle which began in 1949; and prices for 1951 and 1952 were definitely affected by cyclical influences.
A Study of the Knowledge and Skills Required of Draftsmen in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area: This study was designed to identify the knowledge and skills that draftsmen employed in the greater Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas metropolitan area should posses. This study was conducted to identify the following as related to draftsmen in the Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas area: What kind of education and experience is required to prospective draftsmen? What are the general duties of draftsmen? How much emphasis is placed upon knowledge of and skill in the use of drafting equipment? How important are the basic concepts and principles of drafting usually taught in drafting courses? What methods are used to reproduce drawings?
Print Making in the Junior High School: The general purpose of this investigation is to examine the values of print making as compared with drawing and painting in their respective relationships as a part of the junior-high-school art program. The specific purposes of the investigation are: 1. To determine the values which are common to both the print-making arts and the drawing-painting arts. 2. To discover the values which are unique in the print-making arts. 3. To determine which of the print-making processes belong in the junior high school. 4. To recommend the grade placement and limitations of print-making for the junior high school. A conservative general conclusion, based upon objective evidence, can safely be drawn to the effect that in all phases of the learning experiences print making was found to be as valuable as painting and drawing. Its values were compared with respect to specific art development, to general educational growth, to socialization, and to character training.
The Economic Status of College Teachers in Texas Compared with other Professions and Measured by Relative Support of Education in Texas: The problem of this study is the economic status of college teachers in Texas, with emphasis on actual support afforded that profession in the past and in the present; and objective statistical analysis of the ability of the state to more adequately support the profession now and in the future, and the theoretical and actual importance which that economic status presages for out state and society. Actual support of higher education will be measured by salaries and expenditures; ability to support will be measured by the relative wealth of each state in per capita income.
The Effectiveness of the Conservation of Human Beings and of Soil by the CCC Camp in Denton, Texas: The organization of the Emergency Conservation Work was found to possess many faults. The Seventy-Fifth Congress, taking cognizance of some of the more glaring imperfections, approved a measure reorganizing and re-establishing the Emergency Conservation Work under the name of The Civilian Conservation Corp. The bill eliminated many of the defects of the former organization, and invested authority and defined duties and regulations in such a manner that a more efficient institution resulted.
Spotlight on North Texas: Grant Materials: These grant materials were prepared for a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities Common Heritage program to digitize, preserve, and provide access to community historical records. The award funded digitization of print and media items related to the motion picture history of Denton County and a lecture highlighting Denton’s film history and materials discovered during the program. For this grant, UNT served as the lead institution and collaborated with the Texas Archive of the Moving Image. The grant materials include a history of Denton County’s involvement in film production and distribution, digitization standards, and a work plan for the project. This proposal was funded for $11,840.
Broadening Access to Books on Texas and Oklahoma: Application Cover Page and Narrative for Grant Application for Humanities Open Book Program: This two-year project, led by the University of North Texas Libraries, will broaden access to 141 books selected by one of three publishers or by the UNT Libraries for their relevance to the history of Texas and Oklahoma. It will also broaden access to five humanities-related books to be selected once the grant starts. Those books not yet available online through the Gateway to Oklahoma History, Portal to Texas History, or UNT Digital Library websites will be digitized, with full-text searching, and added to the appropriate site. All books will be converted to EPUB and Kindle formats, made available to download with the digitized version online, and added to the UNT Library Catalog and to WorldCat. The project also includes the production of “print-ready” PDFs from the scans of many of the books to allow them to be made available for sale in print again using print-on-demand technology. This proposal was submitted in June 2015 and funded in December 2015 by the National Endowment for the Humanities for $95,599.

A Chemical, Physical and Biological Investigation of the Total Suspended and Dissolved Substances in Lake Dallas with Emphasis on Sanitation: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the suspended organic matter and the total phosphorus in the waters of Lake Dallas and to evaluate these findings. Since organic matter floating in lakes is largely comprised of minute plants, animals, and detritus derived from animals and plants, the fertilizing effect of phosphorus must be considered as an integral part of this problem.
The Economic Inefficiency of Texas Water Law: The State of Texas is endowed with many valuable resources. It has vast oil and gas deposits, huge timber reserves, and land in abundance. Not least among its re sources is water, the key resource. It is water, even before food, which sustains all life on this earth. Without water the human processes of agriculture, industry, and commerce would be impossible. Water serves as a major source of energy, transportation, and recreation. It is not a risky statement to make that water, above everything else on this earth except land, permits man to exist.
The Indigenous Architecture of Fredericksburg, Texas: In this study sixteen early stone buildings at Fredericksburg, Texas, are described and evaluated as examples of indigenous architecture. Chapter II presents a brief history of the founding of Fredericksburg. Chapter III presents a description of the town site and a discussion of the native materials as used by the pioneer immigrants in the construction of residences and other buildings. Chapter IV is devoted to a detailed description of fourteen buildings as specific examples of the indigenous architecture. Representative photographs of the buildings as they now appear, as well as floor plans, illustrate the text. Two early churches of the indigenous type, accompanied by photographs and floor plans, are discussed in Chapter V. In Chapter VI a summary of the study is given and conclusions are presented.
An Evaluative Study of the Grasslands of the R.J. McMurry Ranch, Denton County, Texas: It is the purpose of this problem to classify the four major pastures of the McMurry ranch using the discussed classification system. The definite measurable qualities characterizing each condition of the system are used extensively in this study. The problem is concerned also with the observation of results of misuse, the present practices that could result in further depletion of portions of the McMurry ranch, and procedures being employed at the present time aimed toward the restoration of these depleted portions.
Popular Choices in Modern Printed Textiles on the Dallas Market: In order to develop a program whereby people can be educated to appreciate and choose the best contemporary designs among the many textiles that are available, it is necessary to know which types of textiles, if any, among those designed in the modern manner, the public accepts, which it rejects, and the factors that influence selection. This study was made to discover those factors -- such as color, subject matter, and utility -- that determine popular choices in a representative group of well-designed modern printed textiles which were available on the Dallas market. The textiles were placed on public exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts.
Development of Range Condition Classes for Coleman County, Texas: This paper deals with a study of the rangelands in Coleman County just west south and west of the Western Cross Timbers of Texas. This problem consists of classifying certain rangelands in this area according to whether they are excellent, fair, good, or poor, the chief basis for which is their deterioration.
The Need for Co-Operation Among Independent Food Retailers of Denton, Texas: It has become more and more evident that independent food retailers must co-ordinate their individual efforts if they are to gain an operating efficiency paralleling that of the corporate multiple-unit or chain system. Such co-ordination largely has taken three courses: (1) group buying clubs, (2) wholesale- sponsored voluntary chains, and (3) retailer-owned co-operative warehouses. It is the last of these that this study suggests as the most appropriate course for Denton independent retailers.
Quantitative Chemical Analysis of the Soils of Erath County, Texas: A chemical analysis of representative samples of Windthorst sand, Denton sand, and Denton clay has been made, and this analysis shows that their composition has a strict correlation with respect to their geological origins. The analyses of the different soils have shown the Windthorst sand to be highly deficient in all of the essential elements, whereas the Denton sand is deficient in only one; namely, phosphorus. The analysis of the Denton clay showed it to be highly fertile. From the consideration of the pH and the lime content, it has been determined to some extent what crops will grow in each of the soils.

Laborers are interpreted as men who do not hold 'white-collared' jobs...educational status is used to indicate the highest grade completed in school...the term economic status means the income of the men under consideration..This study is confined to certain men in Denton, Texas, and deals with only male whites between the ages of 21 and 65 years. The problem is not concerned with what the state should do or should not do, nor does it lead to any solution of existing conditions. The Texas Revolution as an Internal Conspiracy: The idea of the Texas Revolution as an internal conspiracy cannot be eliminated. This thesis describes the role of a small minority of the wealthier settlers in Texas in precipitating the Texas Revolution for their own economic reasons. This group, made up of many of the leading figures in Texas, were, for the most part, well-to-do farmers, merchants, and professional men.. Most of them were slaveholders, and their prosperity depended upon the continued existence of this institution. In their minds, the entire economic growth and development of Texas rested upon slavery. When the Mexican government began to threaten the economic future of Texas by the passage of prohibitatory laws on slavery and commerce, many of the leaders in Texas began to think of freeing Texas from Mexican control. The threat to their own economic position and prosperity gave birth to the idea of Texas independence.
