The Consequences of Labeling a Person as Mentally Ill in an Urban Black Community

Description: This study has a twofold purpose. The first is to determine the consequences related to labeling deviant behaviors, especially as these effects are reflected in the person who labels and defines deviant behavior. The second is to evaluate the medical model of abnormality in relation to the labeling of deviant behavior.

Description: "Shaping" or "method of successive approximation" is a procedure which may be applied to increase the frequency of a response which has a low operant level, or it may also be used to bring about responses which have not been previously emitted. Description: An experiment was conducted to separate the effects of anxiety relief conditioning from other variables which may be operative within that paradigm. A review of the literature revealed that no definitive investigations had been conducted, and critiques of these investigations were offered. Operant Procedures in Marital Treatment

Description: The ability of marital partners to directly change a currently unhappy marriage to a happy one may be a function of each individual's conscious awareness of the topography, frequency, and other parameters of his own behaviors, as well as the effects or consequences these behaviors bring to bear on his spouse. This study was an attempt to combine the use of relevant behavioral awareness and a token economy to rehabilitate a marriage in crisis.

Deep Muscle Relaxation Obtained with Analog Electromyographic Information Feedback

Description: The purpose of the research study was to provide improved relaxation training with the use of an electromyography feedback device based on the design of Green et al. (1969). It was intended that this instrument would allow the training of deep muscle relaxation to the point of neuro-muscular silence, while remaining inexpensive enough to be applied in the clinical setting.

The Effect of Memory Requirement on Schema Learning

Description: A number of previous investigations have suggested that schema learning would be more readily facilitated by a recognition task than a reproduction task due to the increased memory requirement of the reproduction task. Self-ideal, Self-discrepancy and Sociometric Choice Status

Description: This study hypothesized a relationship between self-acceptance and acceptance by others. The hypothesis was that patients chosen frequently by other persons on a friendship criterion would have lower self-ideal, self-discrepancy scores than patients chosen infrequently by other persons on a friendship criterion. The study also hypothesized that depressed patients would have higher discrepancy scores than either the psychopathic or situational stress groups.
