The Polarographic Determination of Titanium in Plutonium Solutions

Description: A polarographic method for the determination of titanium in the presence of plutonium has been devised. Hydrochloric acid solutions of plutonium and titanium are reduced with zinc, made one molar in tartaric acid, and further reduced in the polarographic cell with liquid zine amalgam. Plutonium is thus reduced to the non-interfering (III) oxidation state and a well defined anodic wave for the oxidation of titanium (III) to titanium (IV) is obtained. The height of this wave is directly proportio… more

A Study of an Accidental Radiation Burst

Description: An accidental burst of radiation occurred at the laboratory on 1 February 1951 during remote control operation of a critical experiment. There was no personnel hazard. Normal operations were resumed within 24 hr, and the active material involved in the burst returned to service within three weeks. An unforeseen brief excursion into the prompt critical region was engendered in the act of scramming the assembly at the end of a series of measurements. This report describes the effects of the burst… more

Surface to Mass Dependence of Effective Resonance Integrals for Uranium 238 Cylinders

Description: Technical report outlining the determination of the effective resonance integral for U238 as a function of the mass ratio for cylinders of 5/8" to 3" diameter. Also gives a linear approximation of the effective resonance integral with infinite shielding in the form of a function. [From Abstract]

Zirconium Pilot Plant Research and Development Progress Report

Description: The following progress report was compiled by the research and development division of the zirconium pilot plant. This report discusses two iodination and deposition runs that were completed as of August 20, 1951, as well as the third iodination run that uses a vaporizer condenser that condenses approximately 40 pounds of zirconium iodide.

Zirconium Pilot Plant Research and Development Progress Report

Description: The following report studies the effect of flow rates and deposition pressure on the zirconium deposition in the zirconium pilot plant with the use of a Hilco oil purifier for the vacuum pumps that permitted studies to continue through the month.

Kinetics of Plutonium Reduction in the Redox IB Column

Description: The following report describes work carried out to investigate whether the Hanford IB column as designed in a previous report will decontaminate the uranium adequately from plutonium, particularly if there's any slowness in either the rate of reduction or transfer of the plutonium.

Numerical Technique for Criticality Calculations on Hydrogen Moderated Reactors

Description: "The purpose of this memo is to set down a derivation and numerical technique for a method that can be used for criticality calculations on bare reactors containing hydrogen together with another moderator such as BeO. The method and notation are that of G. Goertzel (NDA)-1, and D. Selengut (NEPA). In the interest of the computers, the numerical technique, associated notation, and calculation form are modeled after that currently used by the ANP Physics Group for BeO moderated reactors."

Precision of the Photographic Spectrochemical Assay of Uranium 235 at Low Concentrations

Description: Abstract: "A series of experiments was carried out to determine the precision of the spectrochemical procedure for the isotopic analysis of uranium, especially at low uranium 235 concentrations. Standards were prepared from uranium hexafluoride which had been assayed on the mass spectrometer with a 95 per cent confidence interval of 0.5 per cent of the amount present. For a determination consisting of 9 separate measurements, the best precision obtained at normal concentration on the 95 per cen… more

Geology and Mineralization of Hunt's Mesa, Monument Valley, Arizona, Navajo County with Recommendations for Exploration Drilling

Description: Abstract: Hunt's Mesa was examined on June 2 and 3, 1951, by the writer assisted by R. C. Cutter. Two channels were located and studied. Outcrops of the channels are mineralized, the mineralization being of the copper-uranium variety. There are indications that an appreciable quantity of ore can be found by exploration drilling. A program of 25,000 feet of wagon drilling is recommended.

Treasure Hill Area, Larimer County, Colorado

Description: Abstract: The Treasure Hill area consists of eight mining-lode claims in secs. 10 and 15, T. 9 N., R. 70 W., Larimer County, Colo. All of the workings were examined and samples were taken from most of them. The results of the examination indicate that there is little or no detectable radioactivity in the schist and granite of the area.

Experimental Investigation of Forced-Convection Heat-Transfer Characteristics of Lead-Bismuth Eutectic

Description: The forced-convection heat-transfer characteristics of lead-bismuth eutectic were experimentally investigated. Experimental values of Nusselt number for lead-bismuth fell considerably below predicted values. The addition of a wetting agent did not change the heat transfer characteristics.

An Investigation at Transonic Speeds of the Effects of Control Chord and Span on the Control Characteristics of a Tapered Wedge-Type Wing of Aspect Ratio 2.5: Transonic-Bump Method

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the control characteristics of flap-type controls of various chords and spans on an unswept wing with a modified double-wedge section, an aspect ratio of 2.5, and a taper ratio of 0.625.The control chords in the study were 25, 35, and 45 percent of the wing chord, and the control spans were 25, 50, and 75 percent of the wing semispan. The data from the study indicated that the control-parameter values are approximately proportional to control chor… more

Experimental Investigation of Effect of Jet Exit Configuration on Thrust and Drag

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the problem of performance losses occurring when airplanes equipped with afterburner and cooling-air ejector installations are flown with the afterburner inoperative. Two sources of the performance losses occurring under some operation conditions were identified: an overexpansion of the propulsive jet and an internal shock system and the excessive pumping action resulting from the off-design.

A two-dimensional cascade study of the aerodynamic characteristics of a turbine-rotor blade suitable for air cooling

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the aerodynamic problems associated with turbine blades with relatively low solidity and thick profiles, which makes them suitable for use in air-cooled turbines, in a two-dimensional cascade. Testing indicated that supersonic velocities may be obtained over the greater portion of the blade suction surface, resulting in high blade loading without an appreciable decrease in efficiency from that obtained using blades with lower velocities.
