Acid Formation in the Radiolysis of Phosphorus Esters

Description: The radiolytic decomposition of tributyl phosphate has been show by burr to product gases, acids, and polymers. the acids that are formed can limit the usefulness of tributyl phosphate for the processing of radioactive materials. The study of acid formation on radiolysis therefor becomes important to us for the understanding of the mechanism of acid formation, the influence of added materials and the effect of the structure of organo- phosphorous compounds. Samples of purified esters have been … more

After Shutdown Heating in the HFIR

Description: After shutdown heating rates have been calculated for the target, control plates, and the beryllium reflector of the HFIR. Hilvety previously calculated the after shutdown heating rates in the element and his results are reported in ORNL CP-60-4-110. Decay times of 1.0 10, 10^2, 10^3, 10^4, and 10^5 seconds have been considered, and heat fluxes have been computed for all of the mentioned components. The greatest heat fluxes were found to be at the surfaces of the control plates and the permanen… more

Air Scattering of Co60 Gamma Rays: Theory Versus Experiment

Description: For Co60 source at 15 meters, the air-scattered gamma dose rate predicted by theory is excerpted from ORNL-1575, pp. 167-203. This is compared with experimental measurements for the same source and comparable geometry reported by Convair in CVAC-170T. After applying an appropriate correction for ground scattering as estimated in Mart-55-16T (Convair), the two results are found to be in substantial agreement.

Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Project Quarterly Progress Report For Period Ending June 10, 1955

Description: The development of the reactor layout is continuing. New features that have been incorporated because of stress, fluid flow, or fabricability considerations include an elliptical fuel expansion tank, a rounded dome to enclose the top of the reactor, a newly designed sodium pump impeller, and other related items. Recently completed heat exchanger tests yielded consistent data from which a series of heat exchangers is being designed. The most promising of these will be chosen for the ART.

Aircraft Reactor Test Hazards Summary Report

Description: The successful completion of a program of experiments, including the Aircraft Reactor Experiment (ARE), has demonstrated the high probability of producing militarily useful aircraft nuclear power plants employing reflector-moderated circulating-fuel reactors. Consequently, and accelerated program culminating in operation of the Aircraft Reactor Test (ART) is under way. In order to adhere to the compressed schedule of the accelerated program, it is essential that the Atomic Energy Commission app… more

The Alkaline Method for Treatment of High Radiation Level Aluminum Wastes

Description: The method is based on caustic precipitation and centrifugation (which removes the Cs and small amounts of Sr, rare earths, Zr, Nb, and Ru). These are removed in the supernatant and run through a cation exchange column. This separates Zr-NB and Ru. The effluent is precipitated and the Zr-Nb is stored in an asphalt pit. The Ru then may be recovered from the precipitate. The precipitate from the original centrifugation is calcined, pressed and transported to a deep well.

Analog Computer Analysis of the Thermal Behavior of the EDCR Due to Reactivity Accidents

Description: The ORNL analog computer was used to examine one aspect of a safety system for the EGCR. The thermal behavior of the fuel as a result of increases in reactivity at various power levels and gas flows was examined. Safety actions initiated by wither a flux-minus-flow signal or a reactor outlet gas temperature signal were included in simulation.

Analog Stimulation of HRP In-Pile Slurry Loop Facility in the LITR

Description: An analog simulation is made of the HRP in-pile slurry loop in the LITR. The radiolytic gas pressure in the pressurizer is determined. This pressure is a result of the generation of radiolytic gas in the loop core. A graphical result is obtained showing the effect of catalyst activity and pressurizer flow rate on the pressure rise from radiolytic gas. The thermal behavior of the system is studied, and the response to various controller settings is predicted. Controller settings very near optimu… more

The radiation exposure received by operating personnel during this period averaged 60 mrcp/man-week. Most radiation exposure was received in areas that were intended to be only slightly or nonradioactive. However, because insufficient decontamination of process solutions was achieved and equi… more

The ANCO System for Boron Isotope Enrichment Progress Report for Period Ending September 20, 1955

Description: A new gas-liquid countercurrent system (the ANCO system from Anisole-Complex) for the enrichment of boron isotopes has been developed. It is believed that use of this systems will result in a considerably lower unit cost for enriched boron-10 than was previously possible. The system utilizes the exchange reaction between BF3 (gas) and BF3·anisole (liquid) to concentrate boron-10 in the liquid phase. The single stage isotopic separation factor for this system has been found to vary from 1.039 at… more

Anisotropic Elastic Scattering of Neutrons

Description: In an elastic collision the neutron loses part of its kinetic energy to the nucleus with both the kinetic and momentum of the system being conserved. However, for many elements the scattering is not isotropic in the center-of-mass system at the higher neutron energies. Many of the present reactor multigroup codes include anisotropic scattering at the high neutron energies, while many others assume isotropic scattering at all energies. In order to consider some of the effects of including anisot… more

Apparent Observations Ionic Sound Waves in an Arc Plasma

Description: Oscillations have been observed in a magnetically supported cylindrical rod of plasma. This rod of plasma can be the discharge occurring in the defining aperture of a Mode II, pressure gradient arc. Similar oscillations can also occur in the column of a Mode I arc. These oscillations appear to be the mechanism that drives the Mode II blowup phenomena.
