Description: An experiment was designed utilizing a charge-exchange reaction to study the decay and interactions of the neutral K mesons produced. The experiment produced no events that could be interpreted as either the decay or interaction of neutral K mesons. The nature of the experiment and the possible explanations of this unexpected result are presented in this paper.

Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 1/4-Scale Model of the Duct System for the General Electric P-1 Nuclear Powerplant for Aircraft

Description: Report discussing testing on a model of the General Electric P-1 nuclear powerplant to determine its internal aerodynamic characteristics. The main purposes of testing were to measure the mass-flow distribution of air, to measure the total-pressure losses for the duct components and complete model, and to determine modifications necessary to attain the desired performance characteristics.

The Chelate Process: [Part] 5. Investigation in Horizontal Extractors

Description: The recovery of plutonium has been demonstrated in a laboratory countercurrent horizontal extractor using the TTA process. Using three extractive stages and two washing stages in each step, a recovery of 91 percent has been obtained in the chelation step and a recovery of 99.9+ percent in the de-chelation step. With five extractive stages, recoveries of 94-98 percent have been found for the chelation step.

Evaluation of Glass-Clad Bayonet Heaters

Description: This report describes the results of evaluation tests made on several glass-coated bayonet heaters supplied to Separations Equipment Development by the Pfaudler Company. The glass-coated heaters were found to be resistant to thermal shock, mild mechanical shock, and chemical attack by boiling 60% nitric acid.

Exploratory Tests of the Behavior of Several Materials in a Supersonic Air Jet at 4,000 Degrees Fahrenheit

Description: "Several materials have been tested in the ceramic-heated jet (laboratory model) at a Mach number of 1.96 with a stagnation temperature of approximately 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Test models made of molybdenum were less affected by temperature than titanium, stainless steel, and an alloy of 90 percent tungsten, 6 percent nickel, and 4 percent copper. Titanium and steel burn with highly exothermic reactions when subjected to the 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit air jet" (p. 1).

A rapid evaluation of the distribution of such surface contamination cam be obtained by an aircraft mounted detector. Time Dependence of the Beam in the 86-Inch Cyclotron

Description: In the preliminary stages of getting up a time-of-flight system for measuring neutron spectra from proton reactions, a study of the time dependence of the beam in the 86Inch Cyclotron was made. This study revealed the expected bunching of the protons to produce a short burst of beam on each cycle of the 13.4 Mc/s accelerating voltage. In addition to the 13.4 Mc/s structure, however, there was a 360 c/sec modulation of the beam pulses and a complicated pattern built upon that.

A unified theory of plastic buckling of columns and plates

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Effects of Geometric Dihedral on the Aerodynamic Characteristics in Pitch and Sideslip of an Unswept- and a 45 Degree Sweptback-Wing-Fuselage Combination at High Subsonic Speeds

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of geometric dihedral on the aerodynamic characteristics of wing-fuselage combinations with wings of aspect ratio 4, taper ratio 0.6, and angles of sweep of 3.6 and 45 degrees at the quarter-chord line. Little analysis is provided, but the results indicate that the effect of geometric dihedral on the effective-dihedral parameter is slightly larger than predicted at angles of attack of about 6 degrees.
