COMPARISON OF GASES FOR USE AS THE COOLANT IN A GAS-COOLED REACTOR

Description: The expression STAM(Pr) /sup 2/3//(M Cp)/sup 3/! which is often used to compare the merits of various gas coolants is derived and the errors involved in using this term are discussed. An example using CO/sub 2/ and He is shown to illustrate the difference between the true pumping power required and that predicted by the above expression. (auth)

Notes Pertaining to Recuplex Product Evaporation

Description: A red-brown liquid formed during the evaporation of simulated Recuplex product solutions containing plutonium, nitric acid, carbon tetrachloride, and tributyl phosphate (TBP). The liquid is soluble in carbon tetrachloride. Concentration of solutions containing a TBP to plutonyl nitrate weight ratio of 0.15 or greater to a pot temperature of 150 deg C caused reactions which produced enough heat to bring the pot contents to a red heat with copious evolution of gases. Evaporation path curves and b… more

Properties of Uranium Dioxide-Stainless Steel Dispersion Fuel Plates

Description: The physical and mechanical properties of GCRE-type fuel elements were determined from room temperature to 1650 deg F. The fuel elements were prepared by cladding Type 318 stainless steel sheet to a core containing 15 to 35 wt.% UO/ sub 2/ in either prealloyed Type 318 stainless steel or elemental iron-18 wt.% chromium-14 wt. % nickel-2.5 wt. % molybdenum. The tensile strength in the direction perpendicular to the rolling plane decreased from 24,600 psi at room temperature to 9,200 psi at 1650 … more
