A 0. 4 mm Interferometer System Using Dielectric Waveguide

Description: A 0.4 mm submillimeter-wave, phase-modulated polarimeter/interferometer is used for simultaneous time-dependent measurement of line-averaged electron density and poloidal field-induced Faraday rotation along chords of the plasma column in ISX-B tokamak. Heterodyna detection and hollow dielectric waveguide are utilized to achieve the high sensitivity required for the multichord equipment.

1-D hybrid code for FRM start-up

Description: A one-D hybrid has been developed to study the start-up of the FRM via neutral-beam injection. The code uses a multi-group numerical model originally developed by J. Description: The superconducting magnets for the accelerator's rings will be cooled by a forced flow supercritical helium system from a central refrigeration plant. The design temperature for these magnets varies from 2.6 to 3.8/sup 0/K depending on a magnet's location in the ring. 3-D solution of flow in an infinite square array of circular tubes by using boundary-fitted coordinate system

Description: Heat transfer and fluid flow over circular tubes have wide applications in the design of heat exchangers and nuclear reactors. 3 mm Anisotropy Measurement: On the Quadrupole Component in theCosmic Background Radiation

Description: We have mapped the large-scale anisotropy in the cosmic background radiation at 3 mm wavelength using a liquid-helium-cooled balloon-borne radiometer sensitive enough to detect the dipole in one gondola rotation (1 minute). Statistical errors on the dipole and quadrupole components are below 0.1 mK with less than 0.1 m K galactic contribution. Description: 4 ..pi.. data taken with the Plastic Ball show that cluster production in relativistic nuclear collisions depends on both the size of the participant volume and the finite size of the cluster. Ablative fast pyrolysis of biomass in the entrained-flow cyclonic reactor at SERI

Description: Progress with the entrained flow cyclonic reactor at SERI is detailed. Feedstocks successfully used include wood flour and fairly large sawdust. Preliminary results show that relatively complete vaporization of the biomass is realized and that the yields of tar or gas can be varied over quite a range with trends following first order kinetic concepts.

Absolutely calibrated soft-x-ray streak camera for laser-fusion applications

Description: The intensity output of a soft-x-ray streak camera was calibrated (SXRSC) in order to make absolute flux measurements of x rays emitted from laser-produced plasmas. The SXRSC developed at LLNL is used to time-resolve x-ray pulses to better than 20 ps. The SXRSC uses a Au photocathode on a thin carbon substrate which is sensitive to x rays from 100 eV to greater than 10 keV. Acceleration of heavy ions to very high energies

Acceleration of magnetized plasma rings

Description: One scheme is considered, acceleration of a ring between coaxial electrodes by a B/sub theta/ field as in a coaxial rail-gun. Acid digestion of combustible radioactive wastes
