A Sunset Commission for the Federal Government: Recent Developments

Description: The sunset concept provides for programs and agencies to terminate automatically on a periodic basis unless explicitly renewed by law. In recent years bills to create a federal sunset commission, modeled on the sunset review process in Texas, have been introduced. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s FY2006 Budget Request: Description, Analysis, and Issues for Congress

Description: For FY2006, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is requesting $16.456 billion. That amount is a 2.4% increase over the $16.070 billion (adjusted for the rescission) appropriated in the FY2005 Consolidated Appropriations Act (P.L. 108-447). The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD): FY2006 Budget

Description: On July 21, 2005, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a $34.8 billion FY2006 budget for HUD. Like the House version, the Senate bill rejects the President’s Strengthening America’s Communities Initiative (SACI). It increases funding above both the President’s request and the House version for HOPE VI, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)-related programs (including Section 108 loan guarantees), Native American Housing Block Grants, and Rural Housing and Economic Development.
