new shopping center on Buckner Boulevard as
examples of Thomton-Reese taking the side of
big business over the wishes of residents.
The Piedmont-Scyene area has attracted
numerous gay and lesbian residents in recent
years.
McCord said that if Duncan runs again,
Pleasant Grove gays and lesbians will continue
supporting him. Some other well-qualified
candidate will run against her if Duncan
decides not to, he vowed.
"She's had three years to come forward,"
McCord said. "It's too late now."
Thomton-Reese proposed the cease-fire the
day after the election. She denied ever ignor-
ing neighborhood's concerns, saying that eco-
nomic development is vital to the district's
well-being.
"We've all- got to work together for the
good of the district," said Thomton-Reese,
who came under sharp criticism from McCord
just days before the election. "I want to repre-
sent all residents of District 4. These are not
just words. I really mean it."
Thornton-Reese said that she would also be
willing to work with her opponent, former
Council member Larry Duncan, who has
waged an intense battle to unseat her.
"If they would give me a chance, I think
everything would be okay," Thornton-Reese
said. "I'm willing and ready to assist in any-
way that I can."
Thornton-Reese complained that neighbor-
hood activists rejected her overtures to get
involved with them, including her attendance
at a meeting where someone told her she was
unwelcome.
McCord said residents objected to
Thornton-Reese bringing guests along to the
meeting who had nothing to do with the
neighborhood.
Thornton-Reese's pledge to cooperate with
the gay community living in the
Piedmont/Scyene area of Pleasant Grove fol-
lowed a contentious 18-month battle to retain

her seat. Duncan, who served on the Council
for eight years until term limits forced him to
step down in 1999, ran against Thornton-Reese
in May 2001.
Thornton-Reese won the election by 16
votes, but a visiting state district judge voided
the election after the discovery of 32 allegedly
illegal votes. Thornton-Reese appealed the
decision, but the 5th Court of Appeals upheld
the judge's decision and ordered the new elec-
tion to be held on July 27, which Thornton-
Reese won.
Thornton-Reese faced a candidate support-
ed by Duncan in her first successful race in
1999.
Duncan said that he will decide in about
two weeks whether he will run again.
"The issues we worked for so hard — and
quite a few people put their heart and soul into
it — those issues are
still there today,"
Duncan said. "1 will
continue working on
those in whatever I
determine is the
most effective way."
City codes are
not being enforced,
city services are
lacking and streets
Thornton-Reese are deteriorating,
said Duncan, who
lives in Buckner Terrance about 10 houses
away from Thornton-Reese.
Duncan said that he is satisfied with the
results of the most recent election, in which
Thornton-Reese took 2,105 votes, compared to
Duncan's 1,900.
"It reflected the voters' decision, and I've
always been respectful of that," Duncan said.
Council member Mary Poss who represents
District 9, which includes the White Rock Lake
area, mailed out a letter to District 4 residents,
urging them to vote for Thomton-Reese. She
called Thornton-Reese "fair, qualified and
absolutely tireless in her work for the entire
district." Poss accused Duncan of putting poli-
tics first.
The Dallas County Elections office reported
that the special election attracted 128 more vot-
ers than the original election.
Thornton-Reese said that she remained
confident throughout the ordeal that she
would win again.
"I won the first time," Thornton-Reese said.
"I never did anything wrong. I just knew that I
would win again." ▼
