tive medium, West has worked with a number
of gay artists. He and a few Bay-area emcees
joined together to form a group called Deep
Dickollective. West discusses how the notable
name came to be.
"In the Bay area and the spoken-word
scene, there are all of these collectives of
women who celebrate eroticism and the body
and women power. Some of them have names
like the Pussy Poets. And then I was meeting
with a few friends of mine who were hip-hop
artists and emcees, we were joking about how
we should get together and form a collective
and call ourselves Deep Dickollective. So it
was actually a name that we did jokingly.
Then once we started using it, people thought
it was catchy," he explains.
West has also collaborated with Dallas-
based Emcee Chaser in a duo called G.R.E.Y.
Their politically charged work deals with race
and racism within gay communities. In all of
his collaborations and solo work, West
attempts to connect with hip-hop's roots, and
uses those roots to combat his critics.
"Hip-hop was a form of black creative
expression that was used to supplement the
voice people weren't given in the inner city to
convey their lives and experience," he says.
"For me now, it's like I'm following in the
safne hip-hop tradition of giving voice to
issues and experiences that aren't being heard.
So when people say there shouldn't be gay
people in hip-hop, I think that's contradicting
hip-hop's very origins." ▼
Tiin'm and Emcee Chaser perform on Aug. 4 at
6 p.m. at Maya’s Music Box, 2702 Commerce St.
in Deep Ellum. For additional information, call

HELLO, DOLLY!
Dallasites are in for a real treat this weekend. The
big-bosomed Queen of Country, Dolly Parton, hos
embarked on her first full-fledged tour in a decade.
And out of the scant 13 shows she's headlining in inti-
mote venues, she's included Dallas' Granada Theater
on her tour list. The refurbished Lower Greenville
locale has already sold out its 1,400 seats, and the
evening promises to be quite a hoedown. The sweet-
voiced Parton has been winning phenomenal praise
for returning to her bluegrass roots on her last two
albums, Little Sparrow and Halos & Horns. From her
flossed-out wig performance in Steel Magnolias to her
devoted friendship to her effusively gay manager,
Sandy Gallin, Dolly Parton has always held a sacred
place in the gay community. When asked about her
position about gay
rights, the country
music legend hos
said, "I believe in
'human rights' and
the Scripture, 'Judge
not, lest ya be
judged.' I have many
gay friends who I
love dearly. I have
also lost some very
special friends to AIDS. I believe that being gay is
something you are, not something you do."
Dolly Parton performs Aug. 3 at 8 p.m. at the
Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Ave. Tickets
S38.50. This show is sold out. 714-373-8000.
