Family Fundamentals
Family Fundamentals
is a nosy film. It aims to
get qI the heart of con-
servative parents who
see their children's
homosexuality as sinful.
It seeks to delve into the
lives of those children
and find out how they
maintain self-esteem
within a whirlwind of
judgment. It makes its
way into the core of
homophobia, in an
attempt to analyze it
from the inside out. Digging deep is a quality that film-
maker Arthur Dong's latest documentaries have shared
for the better. And once again here, his nosiness is com-
pelling. This film takes us on a nol-so-bright journey
with those whose religious faith contradicts the con-
crete reality of their children's lives. His focus is on
three families — a conservative Christian, a Mormon
and a Catholic Republican whose children have all
come out of the closet. Dong boldly explores the con-
flicting issues of conservative spirituality, sexuality and
family. But he does so by connecting them to deeply
personal stories and relating the audience to individual
experience. Even if what Dong finds at the end of the
path is not always encouraging, the journey there is
definitely worth taking. ★ ★★

Pumpkin
So yes, Christina
Ricci does indeed kick
butt. She's chosen
another winning proj-
ect with this bizarre but
clever piece of film-
making. Taking a few
satirical cues from films
like Drop Dead
Gorgeous and legally
Blonde, Pumpkin is
bitchy and lyrical at
once. Ricci stars as
Carolyn, a bleach blond
sorority girl whose carefree life and hot boyfriend look
a lot more amazing than they are. She gels introduced
to the harsh reality of the world when she begins work-
ing with a physically challenged boy for charity, the tit-
ular Pumpkin (Hank Harris). When he first meets her,
Pumpkin is immediately drawn to Carolyn. But will she
care back? Since the premise of this satire is already a
bit outrageous, it's no surprise that filmmakers
Anthony Abrams and Adam Larson Broder go for the
gusto. An oft-times hilarious film that pokes fun at
anyone who attempts to lose oneself in a life of super-
ficiality, Pumpkin is an original breath of fresh air.
While not all of it works and some scenes are heod-
scratchingly strange, the film has an underlying pas-
sion that makes up for its blunders. And Harris does a
delightful job playing a handicapped without it veering
into inappropriate parody.

Tadpole
Tadpole is the
breeziest, most delight-
ful film out there where
a 40-year-old woman
has sex with a 15-year-
old boy. If you blink,
you'll completely miss
whether or not this is a
moral issue to a single
character. Yet the film is
great fun and offers up
fine performances from
newcomer Aaron
Stanford as the titular
teenage genius, Sigourney Weaver as the Mrs.
Robinson-esqe stepmom and object of Tadpole's affec-
tion, and scene-stealer Bebe Neuwirth as the friend of
the family who carries out a brief fling with Tadpole.
The film uses Voltaire as an ironic reference point
throughout, but plays like contemporary Moliere with
an Oedipus complex. Adding some farcical zing is John
Ritter, who reclaims the prize as the most successful
Three's Company ex-cast member. But back to the
February/December romance. If these two characters
had been male, no matter how mature the 15-year-old
boy was, this PG-13 gem would be slapped with at least
an R rating, maybe an NC-17 and decried by anti-
pedophilia groups nationwide. Tadpole is great in
showing the context in which o relationship like this can
truly work, but will sadly be the winner in the old dou-
ble-standard game that turns older women who sexu-
alize younger boys into self-assured seductresses, and
older men who do the same thing into sickos. ★★★
Playing exclusively at the Landmark's Inwood
Theare.
