Zimbabwe leader restates anti-gay
stance, won't obey 'biased' judges
HARARE, Zimbabwe — President
Robert Mugabe, who led Zimbabwe to
independence from British colonial rule,
told lawmakers last Friday that he would
veto any attempt
to legalize sex
between people of
the same gender.
"When I said
gays are worse
than dogs and
pigs, I really
meant it because
pigs don't do
unnatural things,"
Mugabe said, e
referring to anti- °
gay comments he made last year that infu-
riated gay rights activists around the
globe.
Mugabe also told legislators that his
increasingly authoritarian government
would ignore rulings from judges he con-
sidered biased. "We will respect judges
where the judgments are true judgments,"
said.
Mugabe, who has ousted several
judges he has deemed a threat. Mugabe's
government has repeatdly ignored court
orders, instructing police not to enforce
them, and last year the president expand-
ed the nation's Supreme Court in an appar-
ent effort to pack the bench with sympa-
thetic jurists.
Gay couple says hotel owner ejected
them after learning of shared room
LONDON — A hotelier in Britain's pic-
turesque Lakes District was reported to
authorities after ejecting a gay male cou-
ple who were sharing a room at the estab-
lishment. Colin Harrison, who runs the
Swan Hotel near Thornwaite, allegedly
confronted Nigel Griffiths and Ian
Humphreys in the hotel's dining room,
ordering them to find accommodation else-
where after Harrison discovered that the
men had rented a room together. The gay
couple charged the hotel operator with ille-
gal discrimination, according to a report in
London's Daily Telegraph. But a source at
the hotel told the newspaper that the argu-
ment developed out of a dispute unrelated
to the guests' sexuality, "and then if got out
of hand," the source said.

The Anglican Church of Kenya expressed
disappointment that a Welsh archbishop,
Rt. Rev. Rowan Williams, was named
Archbishop of Canterbury, considered the
spiritual leader of the world's Anglican
communion. Kenya Archbishop David
Ditari said the Anglican Church of Kenya
disagreed strongly with Rowan's stance
approving the blessing of same-sex rela-
tionships.
