ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Many deserve acknowledgement. I sincerely thank Dr. Knezek above all. He has been my
mentor and guide since I started this program in 2014. His quantitative style really resonated
with me, and I knew from the beginning I wanted his support as my major professor. He has
provided guidance all along the way, and I am so appreciative of his support. I would like to
acknowledge my other committee members, Dr. Michael Spector and Dr. Cathleen Norris. Dr.
Spector was always very candid and provided the kind of support and feedback I needed to up
my game. Dr. Norris was always encouraging of my research in the field of ubiquitous devices
for teaching and learning and recognized the importance of analyzing secondary data. The
support of my committee is so appreciated.
This dissertation would not have been possible without the partnership of Miles
Bennett, Athletic Commissioner and Darren Gasper, Superintendent of Education, and the
participating students and teachers from the the Sun West School Division in Rosetown,
Saskatchewan, Canada. Their interest in investigating the effectiveness of the use of technology
within a physical education classroom led to this collaboration. A special thanks is also in order
for Ali Young, Education Account Manager for Polar Electro, Inc. and Francois Gazzano of
FITSTATS Technologies, Inc.
My family has been a true force through this journey. My husband, Richard was always
there as my cheerleader along with my daughters, Kate and Olivia. My father, a chemist and
alumnus of UNT always kept my mind pointed in the right direction. Finally, I have to include
my animals, Dazy, Atticus, Tex and Pumpkin...all who suffered from a lack of my attention over
the years. I am forever grateful for their silent support.iii
