The Challenge to Statute 21.06
Page Two
Hundreds and perhaps thousands of hours were spent in preparing the
case, discussing strategies, developing educational efforts, and doing
fund raising. And as the plantiff, I can assure you I never dreamed
that such an "adventure" could test my stamina as it did. The toll on
the emotions of the Texas Human Rights Foundation was severe as well.
I believe we need to be more calculating about the costs of long term
projects. It is not unusual to acquire and maintain interests and
energies of people for short term projects. Enthusiasm is usually high
for projects up to 12 months in duration. After that, momentum slacks
off and people lose interest, regardless of how noble the cause might
be.
Suggested remedies for these concerns might be: (a) retaining
professional fund raising services to obtain necessary funds; (b)
periodic "wellness" counseling sessions and/or support programs for
those involved; (c) a finely tuned volunteer program to ensure that all
the work that needs to be done is done by supportive personnel.
Another suggestion for addressing the concern of large, long-term,
statewide projects is to develop a demographically proportioned assembly
drawn from a crosscut of socio-political groups in Texas to discuss and
decide upon important facets of the project. This so called "project
assembly" would want to hold frequent meetings in various parts of the
state to encourage and seek input from those who are directly affected
by such projects. This, I believe, will instill an identity with the
project which will translate into a commitment of time, money, and
energy by a greater number of people.
