"Oh, but it can't happen here, not in America," people are prone to
say. Never mind that those in the early gay movement in Germany said
the same thing --even as they were being crammed into boxcars on their
way to their deaths.
At this writing there is a concerted effort in Oregon and Colorado to
rescind the hard-won laws protecting gay citizens from harassment,
discrimination and violence. But the bigots pushing this hate-agenda are
determined to go even further by mandating that homosexuality be
classified as "abnormal, wrong, unnatural and perverse." Measure Nine
would require the state government to be assertive in discouraging
homosexuality, teaching that it is a moral offense similar to pedophilia,
sadism and masochism.
Portland police report that gay and even straight churches that
support gay civil rights have been vandalized. It goes without saying that
violence against our people has increased greatly in recent years.
Regardless of whether Measure Nine passes or is defeated, the
bigots are determined to introduce similar legislation in 35 other states.
These people carry Bibles. They have money and are well-organized.
We, you and I, must be prepared to fight hatred every time and
everywhere. We must constantly vow, "Never again." If we do not, no
one will be safe. No one. Not even in our churches.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
George Santayana (1863-1953)
