It is recommended that additional studies of this
nature be made of the Salt Wash sandstone in areas simi-
lar to Cove Mesa, where the density and quality of sub-
surface information permit close control for accurate
studies of sandstone-shale ratios, and where accurate
core descriptions are available.
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this report is to describe certain
significant features of the stratigraphy and sedimenta-
tion of the Salt Wash sandstone at Cove Mesa, Carrizo
Mountain district, Apache County, Arizona. The great
number of drill holes on Cove Mesa made it possible to
complete a detailed subsurface study utilizing several
hundred available gamma-ray logs and detailed core de-
scriptions of the Salt Wash sandstone.
The writer wishes to express his appreciation to
the personnel of the Grand Junction Operations Office,
U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, including Dr. Robert J.
Wright, Dr. H. E. Stocking, and Miss Jean Frank, for
assistance in assembling the basic data upon which this
study is based. Thanks are also due to Mr. Richard Maise
for drafting the illustrations. Finally appreciation is
expressed to Dr. Wm. Lee Stokes for his critical reading
of the manuscript and his many valuable suggestions in
the course of this investigation.
LOCATION AND GENERAL STRATIGRAPHY OF THE AREA
The index map, figure 1, shows the location of the
Carrizo Mountains district within the Four Corners area.
Figure 2 is a general sketch map of the Carrizo Mountains
area showing the relationship of Cove Mesa to other well-
known mineralized areas in the Carrizo Mountains.
Cove Mesa is an elongate mesa whose axis is almost
north-south, about two and one-half miles long, and with
a maximum width of 3500 feet. It consists of an erosion-
al remnant of the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Mor-
rison formation surrounded by older rocks on the desert
floor below the mesa. The Bluff sandstone underlies the
Salt Wash member in the general area of the Carrizo Moun-
tains. (See correlation table, figure 3.)
