153 A new method of analysis of longitudinal epidemiological data (which takes fuller
154 advantage of the 38 years of accumulated serial measurements than is possible with cross
155 sectional analyses) is being developed with support from staff members of the
1156 Departments of Statistics and Epidemiology. The creation of a new AHS database
'157 (diseases and measurements) for this type of analysis is currently underway.
158
159 A-3. Collection and storage of biological materials:
160
161 Collection and storage of biological materials, such as serum, plasma, and lymphocytes,
162 will be continued with some modification of the method of storage, if necessary. The
163 collection of teeth extracted for health reasons will be continued to provide materials for
164 ESR measurements through the new AHS surveillance system.
165
1166 A-4. Improvement of clinical examination procedures:
1167
168 In addition to the above, clinical examination procedures of recognized benefit to the
169 study participants, such as early cancer detection or health guidance, that will provide
170 more services to the AHS participants as recommended by the Blue Ribbon Panel, will be
171 updated and broadened to maintain a high level of AHS subject participation. However,
172 it is unrealistic to seek to obtain such equipment as a CT scanner or MRI, and where such
173 tests are needed, they should be performed through collaboration with local medical
174 institutions.
175
176 Research plan for the next one year (A1-A4):
177 The plan to produce AHS Report 8 will be developed. In this report, the study period will
178 be extended to 1994 and analytic methods will place greater emphasis on confounding and
179 bias due to long-term follow-up, migration and nonparticipation. The creation of the new
180 AHS database will be completed. A plan to improve services to AHS participants will
181 be developed.
182
83 Research plan for the next three years (A I-A4):
84 The AHS report 8 will be completed and the results published. The new information
85 obtained through the AHS surveillance program should become available for use in AHS
86 Report 9. Comprehensive clinical examination procedures of recognized benefit to the
87 study participants will be introduced in an effort to provide more services to the
88 participants.

94 B-1. Benign tumors:
95
96 a) Hyperparathyroidism (RP 11-86, 2-89):
97
98 Screening for hyperparathyroidism, by measuring serum calcium level, has been underway
