interval between the opening of the timing valve and the
opening of the by-pass valveo The "operation of the system
has been describod in detail .in.-roforonce 1.
..Tha- factors whichha&ve be-et iJvestig' ted are: the ef-
fect of the 'injection-tube length. Qn..th -rate of pressure
rise at the timing valve after theeopnint of the v-lve
(reference 3); the effect of the injection-tube length
and diameter, and of the' pressures in the injection. sys-
tern on the time lag between the opening of the timing
valve and the app;eafance"of the spray'f'r m the automatic
injection valve (reference 4); and the effect of the in-
jection-tube dimensions, the discharge-orifice area, t'he
velocity of the opening of-ithe timing valve, and the ros-
sures in the injection system on the instantaneous pros-
sures at the discharge orifice (roforenco I).. Some data
were presented' in' reforence-1 on the effect of the volume
of' the high.preossuro:roservoir on the instantaneous pros-'
sures at the discharge orifice. The present report con-
tain's t0' results of tests conducted to comploto .this in-
vostigation,
METHOD 'AND APPARATUS .
The method of determining the movement 'ofL the inJec-
tion valve stem (fig. 1) and from this movement computing
'the instantaneous pressures at the discharge orifice has
been fully described in reference 1.
The conditions that were maintained constant during
the present tests were:
Orifice diameter, ' 0.020 in.
Injection-tuba length, 44 .
Injection-tube internal diameter, Ol2 "
Injection-tube external diameter, 0,25 ."
Total length of tubing between
high-pressure reservoir and
discharge orifice, 58 n
Injection pressure,. 3500 1b./sq.in.
Time interval f injection as'
regulated. by the by-pass v.alve,. 0'047 sec.
The high-pres.sre reservoir was a (y.indeF with an _
outside diameter bf 4 inches and art inside diametor of 2
inches.- The volume of the reservoir was.'changed by plac-.. . *@
