ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I owe the completion of this project in large part to the many people who have
supported me. I first want to thank my husband and my parents for their consistent patience
with my need to work and their constant belief in me. I also credit my parents with instilling in
me the passion for learning and perseverance I needed to complete my degree. In addition, I
want to thank my committee, and especially my advisor Dr. Riggs, for their support and
encouragement of my interest in this topic and helpful guidance and suggestions on everything
from the theoretical rationale to the dyadic analyses to the writing. Finally, I am grateful to the
Timberlawn Foundation for funding the larger project this study was a part of, my research
team for their assistance with the data collection, and the families who participated. Thank you.iii
