Notes
Interview conducted in 1997 for the World War II European Theater (Navy) Oral History Project. Interviewer: Richard W. Byrd. The name and history of the USS Santa Leonara (i.e. Leonora, Leonare, Leonore) is disputed. The ship was launched in 1919 and acquired by the US Navy in 1921. It was converted into a submarine tender and renamed Canopus and scuttled off the Philippines in 1942. The interviewee mentions that it was the Santa Leonara on which he sailed to Europe in 1944.
