ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to thank my research advisor Dr. Guido F. Verbeck IV for being my mentor
and aiding in my development as a chemist, person, and peer to others. The lessons and
knowledge that I have acquired from him over the last two years are invaluable in navigating
the world of chemistry and industry. I would also like to thank Terry LaCore and Daniel Krist of
LaCore labs for allowing me to work with their company and supplying the University of North
Texas with the funding to make the UNT/LaCore partnership possible. All the members of the
LaCore team and UNT (University of North Texas) interns made my time enjoyable and
thoroughly enjoyed working in a hard-working positive environment. The unwavering support
was appreciated from fellow graduate students Dr. Imesha De Silva, Dr. Subhayu Nayek, Dr.
Camila Anguiano Virgen, Ashlee Juel Smith, Sydney Schoellhorn, Karen Reyes, and Rachel
Koerber. I would also like to thank Dr. Theresa D. Golden and the Department of Chemistry at
the University of North Texas.
To all my family and friends who have supported me throughout my whole academic
career I give thanks. Without the positivity and encouragement of these people I would not be
the person I am today. Lastly, I would like to give a special thanks to my father Bruce G. Smith
who recently passed away from a short battle with cancer. He was the hardest working man I
ever knew, and I know how proud he was of me. I hope to live my life as a reflection of him and
pass on his teachings and ways to my children one day.iii
