Radio Shack has own world newsmaker
Everybody who knows anything
about Radio Shack knows that Lewis
Kornfeld, 30-year company veteran
and now Vice Chairman, Tandy
Corporation does indeed get around.
And, he can generally be counted on
to be making news somewhere.
Following true to form, Kornfeld
was featured as a world businessman
in the November 18, 1980, edition of
the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (The Japan
Economic Journal) in an article writ-
ten by Toshiyuki Imaki.
A translation of the article shown
in the accompanying photo follows.
(Translated from the Nihon Keizai
Shimbun.) "World Businessman"
Mr. Lewis Kornfeld, Vice Chairman
of Tandy Corporation, U.S.A.
Advanced merchandise from -severe
competition
"The personal computer market will
still continue to grow. Although
many companies have their eyes on
this growth and entered into this
market, there is no change in Tandy's
dominant position because Tandy is
the only company which has a store
network not only in Japan and Europe
but also from the North Pole to
Texas." As might be expected of
Radio Shack and its 8,000 stores
worldwide, Mr. Kornfeld expresses
his confidence that "severe competi-
tion brings us progress in our mer-
chandise." Tandy accepted the
challenge of Texas Instruments, the
largest manufacturer of semi-con-
ductors in the U.S., who advanced
into the microcomputer market, but
Tandy's largest share did not waver
at all.
Even in the retail business in the
U.S., where the huge chain stores
throng, Tandy is far superior to others
in the rate of profitability. The profit
was 110 million dollars for the sales
of nearly 1.4 billion dollars, and the
ratio of gross income on sales ex-
ceeds eight percent. The secret of its
high profit is that all the merchandise
carries its own brand and Tandy does
not discount. The company sells
sound products, electronics parts
and microcomputers with the brand
names of "Radio Shack", "Realistic",
etc., but one-half of the merchandise
is actually manufactured by its own
2factories, and Tandy is steadily taking
necessary steps for the vertical com-
bination of manufacturing divisions.
Tandy is also a company ironically
called "a producer of millionaires",
as it encourages employees to make
investments on treasury stocks and
offers a special bounty. Mr. Kornfeld
throws out his chest and says "when
we value the stock holdings at the
current price, there could be 100employees whose holdings exceed
one million dollars", and he is one
of them and considers it quite natural
that they work hard.
He has just been promoted from
the President of Radio Shack, the
main division, to the Vice Chairman
of the parent company, Tandy Cor-
poration. While Mr. Kornfeld was
the President of Radio Shack, when
