It's a Lotta Baloney!
A Manager with six years of service to the Company
resigned last December at the end of the month. Funny.
That's when a lot of people pull up their tent pegs and head
West looking for pastures that never turn brown. Anyway, he
thinks I should know he has a tape of (presumably) his last
conversation with his DM. Presumably our tape, too.
However his point in letting me know about his departure
was that "it seems so sad that all the principles that Mr. Tandy
stood for are so rapidly fading away in his absence."
You know what I say to that? I say it's a lotta baloney!
We do have, certainly, some things that often are a lotta
steak and potatoes. For example: numbers-battered DMs can
forget the value of a guy or gal who has put in six years with
us. Plenty of irate Managers forget the same thing. And
practically all of us, at one time or another, hates his boss
(please remember that that's a feeling as well understood on
the 19th floor of Tandy Center as it is in Indiana, and as
normal as apple pie).
Principles are another thing. Plenty of Managers quit
when CDT was around. But our principles have never
changed and are not about to change. Contribute to our
mutual cause and get rewarded basically on the weight of your
contribution. Even so, we've lost a few very well rewarded
contributors through the years, usually because they got
disenchanted, tired or thought they had a better idea (Note: I I
very few had one that paid as well).
Aside from the morality of it, whoinell wants to change
a winning formula?
We've won so many battles against the odds of becoming a
billion dollar baby in consumer electronics. We've pleased so
many stockholders, landlords, bankers and just plain folks.
How? By doing it our way consistently and with heart and
a good conscience.
I'll listen to your gripes. I'll debate the reasons you're no
longer to play on our team. I'll probably be extremely
sympathetic. Just don't ask me to believe we've turned away
from operating on the "people principle" that made this outfit
All Pro. Because we both know that although your problem is
real and its cause is change, the explanation is infinitely
more fragile and complex.
