outside the inlet. The South Carolina had been at sea only a
short time but had attracted worldwide attention, and the Brit-
ish saw her as a huge propaganda prize. No sooner had the
South Carolina hit blue water than three fast British ships closed
on her in light winds. After a noble battle, the South Carolina
was on her way to New York under a British flag.
The war ended and the South Carolina was taken to En-
gland, and shortly after, disappeared from history. However,
the money suits would continue for more than ten years. Even
Thomas Jefferson got involved and shortstopped the colony of
South Carolina's suit against Spain for money due the South
Carolina for the New Province campaign.
During World War II, American Lieutenant William Corbine
came upon an old ship's bell at a jute mill on the Ganges River
in India. Engraved on the bell was "South Carolina" and it now
proudly rests in the War Memorial Building at the University of
South Carolina.

- For the 2005 Calendar Year
By Don Stone, TXSSAR State Historian
Remember the following about Annual Chapter Yearbooks:
(1) There will be three categories of competition for State
yearbooks based upon the latest published chapter
memberships. This will enable chapters of all sizes to
compete.
(2) The winning State yearbooks will be judged according to
content (60%), neatness, design and creativity (20%)
and the submittal of key chapter events in a separate
envelope (20%). It is recommended that you use the
TXSSAR Chapter Annual Report as your table of
contents and arrange your yearbook materials
accordingly. You may find the Annual Report form at
www.txssar.org under the title "TXSSAR Chapter
Activities Report."
(3) Prepare a separate envelope containing you 2005 chapter
key event information including one to three
photographs along with identification from left to
right of who is in the photo and a description of what
happened at each event.
(4) Chapters interested in rules for competing in the
National contests should consult NSSAR's website:
www.sar.org under the titles "Education/Youth" and
then "Americanism Tools."
(5) Now is the time to start collecting the materials for your

HELP TEXAS HAVE THE BEST STATE SAR
ARCHIVES
By Don Stone, TXSSAR State Historian
As we do not have a budget line item to cover our expenditures,
please make a contribution as an individual member or chapter
and send it to the TXSSAR Treasurer marking it "Archives
Collection." Or you may add an amount in the special box on the
membership renewal remittance form when you pay your dues
in the Fall. Five or ten dollars per member would make an
important difference in our efforts.
In addition, please consider contacting the family of a deceased
member for possible items to be archived. Or you may want to
consider your own prearrangements.
We hope to acquire enough unique items to attract national
interest in visiting the UNT Archives. At the time of the 2006
Congress to be held in Dallas, we hope to conduct a field trip to
UNT.

member of the Dallas Chapter SAR
The T.S.C.A.R. theme for the year is Honor the Defenders of
Texas Freedom. The State project will raise funds for the Gonzales
Memorial Museum, which houses the cannon and other artifacts
central to the Texas Revolution. The labels that mark the various
artifacts are old and dilapidated. Our funds will be used to make
new state of the art labels that are easier to read and moreFALL 2005
