FACULTY LIBRARY INFORMATION TOURS (FLIT)
The SLIS Faculty is trying to "flit" over its Denton walls to learn from the
real library world. On Friday, January 21, the Faculty visited the American
Heart Association's National Center Library, Dallas, and the Anderson Clayton
Foods Research Library, Richardson. At the former, Barbara Arie Lightfoot
(MLS '77), Manager, and her assistants, Katie Trickey and Mary Jane (Mollie)
Hines (MLS '82), conducted a tour of the library facility and described its
activities. Ermegarde Martin (MLS '78), Librarian of the latter institution,
discussed her library's functions. Tours of other area libraries of various
types and sizes are planned for Spring.

SCHOOL LIBRARY UPDATE
Revision of National Media Standards
Dr. Jody Charter served recently as a member of the AECT President's Advisory
Task Force on New National Media Standards when they met in New Orleans Jan-
uary 23. At that time, President Elwood "Woodie" Miller read a letter from
Dorothy Blake, President of AASL, which called for AECT's participation in
co-authoring new standards for school library media centers. The AECT Task
Force at that time authored a reply to Mrs. Blake which stress AECT's will-
ingness to proceed and the sense of urgency felt for the development of a
new set of guidelines to be published sometime in 1985.
Research conducted over a year ago which sampled AASL's affiliate assembly
revealed.the need for new standards to address programs of various sizes and
to recognize the differences inherent in small, medium and large size centers.
Soon a writing committee representing both organizations will be named.
Library media specialists are alerted to the need for following the process
of putting together new standards and to input their thinking both as
individuals and through their professional associations. The focus and
directives of 1985 standards are of vital concern to all of us, and as with
writing your legislator, sometimes one voice, one letter, can help.
Learning Resources Certification at SLIS
The composition of current school certification classes at NTSU reflects another
move toward change. Some background information helps explain the phenomena
now taking place. In 1980, the Texas State Board of Education determined
standards for district staffing, size of collections, and program components.
According to Principles, Standards, and Procedures for the Accreditation of
School Districts, the new standards must be fully implemented by the more
than 1,000 districts by September 1985. These requirements include the hir-
ing of fulltime library media specialists for elementary school.
