Gay, lesbian groups blast refusal to run ad
By Karen Harris
Staff Writer of The Dallas Morning News
Dallas-area gay and lesbian
groups angrily objected Tuesday af-
ter The Dallas Morning News
refused to run a full-page advertise-
ment listing names and initials of
area gay men and women in com-
memoration of "National Coming
Out Day."
The ad was scheduled to run in
The News on Tuesday - the first an-
niversary of a march on Washing-
ton by gay men and lesbians.
The Dallas Times Herald also did
not run the ad because the parties
could not reach an agreement, said
Charlotte Taft, a board member ofAmong Friends, a lesbian advocacy
group.
Jeremy Halbreich, executive
vice'president and general manager
of The News, said the newspaper de-
cided not to run the ad because it
objected to the use of initials and
pseudonyms in the copy rather than
full names.
"We expected to receive an ad
that carried a complete list of
names," Halbreich said. "In view of
the ad that contained 50 percent ini-
tials, which could be anyone out
there, and our legal problems we've
had in the past, we saw fit not to run
the ad."
Ms. Taft said at a news confer-ence Tuesday that the group had
been working with The News for
several weeks on the issue of
waivers of responsibility.
Last week, The News asked gay
organizers to submit individual re-
lease and waiver forms for names
appearing in the ads. But Halbreich
said he was told that that could not
be done in such a short time.
The newspaper then asked the
organizers for waivers from organ-
izations that sponsored the ad. "We
anticipated the copy and the re-
leases (for the organizations) on
Monday," Halbreich said.
Ms. Taft said the Times Herald
agreed to run the ad only if thenewspaper had waivers from indi-
viduals on the list and only if ad-
dresses . could accompany the
names.
"I was really floored by the idea,"
Ms. Taft said. "We'll be talking to na-
tional and lesbian groups 'about
what we should do."
Pete Laraway, vice president of
advertising at the Times Herald,
said: "Our policy is, if our attorney
raises concerns, we are very careful
and we make a decision on that."
During the next few days, gay
and lesbian groups will be talking
to another local publication about
running the ad, Ms. Taft said.
