2From CSLA National
Dear CSLA Members,
Happy New Year! President Dottie
Lewis has once again given over her space
in the newsletter, this time so that I can
"71 introduce myself as your new editor.
I was very pleased to be appointed to
this position, and fully realize the huge shoes
I have to fill! Sarah Moore is a gifted
communicator and a wonderful person
whom I had the chance to know and work
with when she lived in Michigan. I valued
both her expertise and her professionalism,
and I know you did, too. I will work hard to
continue to provide you with an eye-
pleasing publication filled with useful
information, and I would appreciate your feedback. Please let me know how
the newsletter is meeting your needs.
I told Carol Campbell that I learned a lot from reading back issues of
the CSLA newsletter in preparation for my interview. I also learned a lot
from my interview -not the least of which was what it is like to be part of a
video-teleconference! Who says CSLA isn't marching full speed ahead into
the 21st century?
On the appointed day in October, Carol, Dianne Oswald and Judy Janzen
went to the Kinko's in Cupertino, California; I went to the Kinko's in
Southfield, Michigan; and, voilt, at 6 p.m. EST they appeared on my television
screen and I appeared on theirs. Ah, modern technology! I was nervous enough
about being interviewed by three people; I thought sitting in front of a
television camera would surely push me right over the edge. But what fun it
was, all of us chatting away for nearly an hour! The scenario was only awkward
when I became aware, as I was deep in animated conversation with Carol,
Dianne and Judy, that I actually was sitting all alone in a small room (with
windows for all the outside world to look in and see me) talking and laughing
away with . . . a big-screen TV Luckily this insight came at the end of the
interview so I barely had time to become self-conscious! Our video meeting
went well, because here I am writing to you as your new editor. Truly, you
never know what you will learn from your association with CSLA!
A little about me personally: In addition to my CSLA duties, I am a
freelance writer, editor and desktop publisher based in Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan. I am also "mom" to my nine-year-old daughter Ainsley, and meal
ticket for our cat Brownie, whom we adopted from the Humane Society two
Easters ago. We attend Nativity Episcopal Church (that's Ainsley and me -
Brownie rarely goes); and I am quite involved in the diocese, including
secretary to our executive council and chair of the newspaper editorial board.
I love new opportunities, and being involved with people who are committed
to what they are doing. For this reason I believe the CSLA is just the right
place for me, and I thank Carol, Dianne, Judy, the board - and you - for
allowing me to serve as your new editor.
