Spring ScheduleA committee of alumni is at work reviewing the organization's constitution and
by-laws and making plans for a "revival" meeting at the Texas Library
Association Annual Conference in Fort Worth in April. Graduates of all SLIS
programs, those holding certificates, and other friends of SLIS are urged to
attend the meeting on Wednesday, April 9, 10:00-11:30 a.m., when changes in
the constitution and by-laws will be discussed and voted on, and officers will be
elected. Dr. Herman Totten, sponsor of the organization, will preside at the
meeting until officers are elected. He promises to use his inimitable revivalist
style to give the group a proper sendoff.
The Alumni Society will play a very important role in supporting the School.
This is your opportunity to give your School a helping hand. Some of the
suggested activities include hosting homecoming events and the annual dinner at
TLA, recruiting students to the School, raising funds for special projects,
maintaining an alumni society home page, and assisting the School's
Advancement Officer in identifying possible scholarship donors. Since the
organization holds a monetary account left over from its earlier days, the
membership may decide to award one or more scholarships this next year. In the
past, the Association has also recognized an outstanding professional who is a
SLIS graduate.
Now hear this! The existing by-laws state that dues are $5 per year or $75 for life
membership. These figures, which have not been changed since the 1970s, will
hold until the meeting convenes on April 9, 1997. The new by-laws, no doubt,
will increase the dues to a more realistic level. We, therefore, urge you to join
now in order to take advantage of these bargain rates and to be able to vote at the
TLA meeting. Existing life members and those deciding to join at that level will
receive a keepsake gift. All members will receive a button indicating that they are
"revival" members of the organization. A membership form is included on the
back page of this newsletter.
