this area of education can play in the development of a
realistic, integrated body cathexis in adolescents through
a well-constructed program of movement and activity. Before
this can be accomplished certain information is necessary.
Does a student's body cathexis affect his ability to per-
form motor tasks? Are there any differences between racial
or ethnic groups in body awareness or cathexis? These are
some of the questions to which answers have been sought in
this investigation. The physical education program in the
secondary school is most effective when based upon an under-
standing of the general nature and characteristics of the
adolescent group it serves and of the social environment
of today's youth. It is hoped that this study will be able
not only to increase understanding o'f body cathexis and its
relationship to motor performance, but also to indicate any
similarities or differences in this relationship within a _
multi-ethnic social milieu.
Statement of the Problem
This study sought to determine the relationship of
body cathexis and motor performance in junior high school
girls. Further, this study investigated whether or not
significant differences exist in body cathexis and motor
