where E is a unit vector that defines the energy sector row of ( A)
as the energy cost of goods and services.4
The abavc analysis can be repeated for ca1..h of the primary energy sectors
resulting in a matrix e whose elements can be summed columninwise to defin:
a "total primary" energy intensity for each sector's output. Prina'y ee tr c
intensities such as hydra and nuclear are converted to fossil fuel ecuiva-

The U.S. Department of Conmerce assembles data for models such as
this one at irregular intervals, the latest being for 1967.u* For energy
analysis, this data has been assembled together with specific data on
new energy technologies by Ballard and Sebald (1975 a,h) in a wiav Yh:
highlights the end uses of energy as defined by the ficticious "eierrgsr C"
sectors (13-20 in Tahhe I). A-mOng the reasons for supplementing the Commerce
Department data are:
1) to express energy use in physical, rather than monetary units
to account for the fact that energy is sald to different
users at different prices.
2) to express industrial energy requirements in terms of functional
end uses so technological changes can be specified explicitly.
The result is a 10 x -10 matrix WhOoS elements are expressed in the units
shown in fig. 2. Nonenergy sector outputs ,re expressed in terms of
constant (1967) dollars because they are too aggregat^d to be chmrac eri:ed2
by a single plhpsic:3 urni of moacure.
* The unit vector is obtained as the product E X because the output of
an energy supply sector is defined rv; :r Rmn Lnt cXtacted fran the L"th.
