At for the tioe course of the contswination in the population as a whole,
it ie necessary to consider each radioisotope individually, aa source of
supply and discrlmlnation of the soil, plant and animal li/e, and the human
body differ for each isutope.

The sean C* body burden of the Range lap adult oales is 14.7 mpc/lg as
cosoared ts 14.1 opc/Kf in 1939. Thus, no significant change has occurred in
the past two years. The high Csx ' body burdens of the Marshallese result
from the high dietary intake through foodstuffs produced in the Marshallese
environment. They reflect the level of residual fallout on the island, and
137
alse the higher uptake and retention of Cl by food plants grown in a I-
X 37
deficient soil. It appears that the body burden of Ca4 has reached an
ivy
approximate equilibrium with the levels of Cs in the diet (although this
is a difficult point to sacertain). The uniformity of the Csl ,7/g» 1C in the
entire Marshallese population suggests that the Csl37 level like iC*° is pro-
port ionsl to the leon body weight.

The mean C* body burden of the Rongelap adult (14.7 Bt;ic/kg) sales was
300 times that of the oean of the aedical team carrying out the study
(0.04® mpc/Kg) . The le-»el of C*137 in sHe world-wide population in July 1961
appears to have declined from the Maximum level observed in 1959. The avor-
137
age value for Ct measured in BNL personnel, for example, declined from
59 ppc/g t in June 1960 te 30 ppc/g l in December 1961. The body burdens of
the Marshallese mill, of course, also be affected by this world-wide fallout
as well aa by the fallout released in the series of testa carried out by the
USSR in October 1961. As the eccuoulation is gradwsl both in the environment,
ss world-wide fallout settles out, and in the huoan body, via the ingestive
route, it will be i» nnsber of months before a clear picture emerges. However,
137
after the moratorium of three years, during which time the Cs levels hsd an
opportunity to stabilise, it will be clear what the direct results are of that
particular series of tests.
